South Korea raises chip data espionage penalty to up to 30 years in prison

Data from South Korean police authorities shows that half of the cases detected in the past year involving leaks of sensitive technology to foreign entities had destinations in China. Meanwhile, Samsung and SK Hynix are facing pressure from Chinese competitors CXMT and Yangtze Memory Technologies, and the South Korean government has just unveiled an investment plan worth 880 billion dollars to develop a large semiconductor industrial hub project in the south of the country, in order to maintain its position as a leader in the global chip industry. In a major case still ongoing, prosecutors have charged 10 former Samsung Electronics employees who are accused of illicitly passing technology to CXMT. The Seoul Central Prosecutors' Office said this caused damage to Samsung's sales in 2024 of about 5 trillion won, or 3.7 billion dollars, and prosecutors said the former employees passed on Samsung's 18-nanometer DRAM manufacturing process along with concealment methods such as relocating offices and switching flights at airports to avoid detection.

Memory Chips Now Dominate Over Half of Semiconductor Revenue
