Summary · why it matters

President Donald Trump is considering a push to reduce capital gains taxes, a move that could let cryptocurrency investors keep more of their profits. Bloomberg reported Wednesday that Trump is weighing a call on Congress to index capital gains to inflation and expand tax exemptions for some home sales ahead of November's midterm elections. Former National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow said he recently discussed indexing with Trump, and current NEC Director Kevin Hassett said the president was looking at additional policies to put before voters. Kudlow said Trump was very interested in both indexing and raising the home-sale exemption, reportedly to $2 million from the current $250,000 for single filers and $500,000 for married couples. No proposal has been formally announced, and most changes to federal tax law would require congressional approval. The IRS treats digital assets as property, so a broad reduction in capital gains taxation could also benefit investors realizing profits from Bitcoin, Ether and other cryptocurrencies unless legislation carves digital assets out of the change. Coincub's 2024 Crypto Tax Report estimated the U.S. could generate about $1.87 billion in tax revenue from $9.36 billion in cryptocurrency gains, though that figure is an estimate, not reported IRS revenue.

Corporate Bitcoin Buying Plunges to About 5,900 BTC in Past Three Months, Glassnode Says

On-chain analytics firm Glassnode reported on September 16 that net Bitcoin purchases by listed companies amounted to only about 5,900 BTC over the past three months, roughly 69.5 billion yen. Compared with the roughly 89,000 BTC, or about 1.048 trillion yen, recorded in July 2025, that is about one-fifteenth of the level. The average acquisition price for listed companies stands at about 80,500 dollars, roughly 6 percent above the market price at the time of the survey, leaving these companies as a whole sitting on unrealized losses. Behind the slowdown in buying are the decline in Bitcoin's price and tightening financial conditions, as core inflation in the United States has fallen to 2.4 percent while the policy rate holds at 3.75 percent, pushing real interest rates higher. New demand from sources other than companies has also weakened: U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs saw net outflows of about 334 million dollars between September 8 and 14, while the stablecoin supply was roughly 301 billion dollars, flat from the previous week. Strategy, one of the world's largest Bitcoin holders, is shifting its focus from an all-out buying strategy to management that emphasizes capital efficiency, and Glassnode noted that the corporate average acquisition price of 80,500 dollars could serve as near-term resistance on the upside.

Bitcoin Tops $81,000 as Short Squeeze Offsets Rate and Regulatory Pressure

Bitcoin surged above $81,000 on Saturday as a wave of short liquidations and renewed spot demand helped the cryptocurrency rebound from losses triggered by higher interest rates and a setback for U.S. crypto legislation. Bitcoin climbed as high as $81,702 on Sept. 18 after trading near $76,400 a day earlier, marking its first move above $80,000 since Sept. 7, and was trading at $81,309.4 as of 22:50 ET, up 5.62% for the day. The rebound followed a difficult week in which the Federal Reserve raised interest rates by 25 basis points and the Bank of Japan followed with a quarter-point increase to 1.25%, its highest policy rate in 31 years, while U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded about $159 million of inflows on Sept. 17. A sharp short squeeze then accelerated Friday's rally, with roughly $192 million of leveraged crypto positions liquidated within one hour, including more than $183 million in shorts, of which Bitcoin shorts accounted for about $119 million. Regulatory uncertainty remains in focus after the U.S. Senate failed to advance the CLARITY Act this week, though the CFTC has submitted a separate crypto market proposal to the White House Office of Management and Budget and the SEC introduced an innovation exemption giving qualifying platforms a five-year route to offer onchain trading in certain tokenized stocks without registering as securities exchanges.
