U.S. officials are reportedly investigating how Chinese artificial-intelligence companies access Nvidia's advanced processors through overseas data centers, a review that could close a major loophole in Washington's chip restrictions. The Commerce Department division responsible for enforcing semiconductor export controls is examining how Chinese AI developers legally rent Nvidia-powered computing capacity located outside China, according to Bloomberg. Nvidia has already tightened its own controls, cutting its list of authorized Asian AI-chip buyers by more than half after introducing tougher screening requirements, and has increased inspections and due diligence in Singapore, Malaysia and Japan. The regulatory threat comes as Nvidia's core AI business continues accelerating, with fiscal first-quarter revenue surging 85% to $81.6 billion and Data Center revenue jumping 92% to $75.2 billion. Nvidia expects second-quarter revenue of roughly $91 billion, notably assuming no Data Center compute revenue from China.
