HSBC Holdings PLCHSBC selected as operator of blockchain platform for tokenised government bonds, a direct role in the digital gilt initiative.

UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves stated on the 14th that the government aims to issue a digital government bond by early 2027, which would be a first among major advanced economies. The pilot initiative for this digital gilt was announced in 2024 and will examine how distributed ledger technology can contribute to more efficient capital markets and cost reductions for financial institutions. Reeves outlined the policy during her annual economic speech at Mansion House, adding that further issuances are planned after the initial one. Speaking at the same event, Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey said the central bank is working to enable the use of digital gilts as collateral in its operations. In February this year, the UK Treasury selected HSBC as the operator of the blockchain platform to be used for tokenised government bonds.
