The UK's Wholesale Digital Market Champion, Chris Woolard, has published the first report on tokenisation of financial markets. The report presents analysis showing that if the UK becomes a leading tokenisation market, it could generate up to 33 billion pounds in annual economic value and up to 14 billion pounds in additional annual tax revenue by 2035. This is a conditional estimate based on calculations by Barclays and PwC. It also forecasts that the global market for tokenised real-world assets could expand from around 30 billion dollars in 2025 to 88 trillion dollars by 2035. Recommendations include pilot issuance of a UK government bond using distributed ledger technology, the Digital Gilt Instrument, by the first quarter of 2027 at the latest, and highlight priorities such as the use of tokenised collateral and improving interoperability of settlement infrastructure.
