US and European stock markets fell sharply on Thursday after Brent crude oil prices surged past $100 per barrel for the first time since May, following reports that a Saudi oil tanker was attacked in the Red Sea. Meanwhile, earnings from Tesla and Alphabet added further pressure, with Tesla shares plunging nearly 15%, their worst daily drop since March 2025, after second-quarter results missed expectations, and Alphabet falling 7% after raising its capital expenditure forecast. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down 506.93 points, the S&P 500 fell 1.21%, and the Nasdaq dropped 2.15%, its worst daily performance since June 23. Investors increased bets on Federal Reserve rate hikes, with markets pricing in a 35.8% chance of at least a 0.25% hike at next week's meeting, up from 11.8% a week ago, and the probability of a September hike rose to 81.4% from 52.4%. European stocks also fell, with the Stoxx 600 down 1.18%, the DAX down 1.56%, and the CAC 40 down 1.64%, after the European Central Bank held rates but opened the door to a September hike. Gold prices dropped over 2% to $4,041.59 per ounce, while the dollar strengthened, with the yen weakening to 163.79 per dollar, its weakest level in 40 years.
