US Battery Grants Won't Break China's Grip, Experts Warn

A CNBC segment highlighted that the Department of Energy's $500 million in grants to seven US battery companies is insufficient to challenge China's dominance, with experts saying catching up will take decades and hundreds of billions of dollars. Albemarle, the largest US lithium producer, trades at $129.57, up 60% over the past year but down 7.94% year to date. China controls 85% of cathode and over 90% of anode production, plus 80% of battery cells and 70% of EVs, while $24 billion in US battery projects were canceled between January 2025 and August 2026 due to policy whiplash. Albemarle's CEO Kent Masters noted stationary storage demand is "off the charts," with global lithium consumption up 45% year-over-year through May, but US EV sales fell 36% after purchase credits expired. The company beat Q2 estimates with adjusted EPS of $3.75 on $1.74 billion revenue, and analysts are 59% bullish with an average target of $172.56.

Albemarle Names BHP Executive Ragnar Udd as Next CEO

Albemarle Corp. has named BHP Group Limited's Chief Commercial Officer Ragnar "Rag" Udd as its next CEO, effective Feb. 1, 2027, succeeding Kent Masters, who will become executive chairman at the 2027 annual meeting. The transition comes as the lithium producer faces a market shaped by Chinese oversupply and shifting demand toward grid-scale storage. JPMorgan analyst Jeffrey Zekauskas cut Albemarle's 2026 adjusted EBITDA estimate by 14.4% to $2.88 billion, noting that each $1-per-kilogram move in lithium prices shifts annual EBITDA by roughly $250 million. Meanwhile, China's revocation of environmental approval for CATL's Jianxiawo mine has led Benchmark Mineral Intelligence to halve its 2026 output forecast for that site to 32,000 tons of lithium carbonate equivalent. Udd brings over 25 years of experience in resource businesses across Australia, Asia, and the Americas, and will oversee Albemarle's Energy Storage and Specialties businesses as the company positions for a market recovery.

Albemarle swings to profit, raises 2026 sales outlook

Albemarle Corporation swung to a profit in the second quarter of 2026 and issued full-year guidance calling for US$5.7 billion to US$6.0 billion in net sales. The company reported sales of US$1,743.31 million and net income of US$479.96 million, with basic earnings per share of US$3.72 compared with a loss per share of US$0.16 a year earlier. Albemarle also guided for 225 to 235 kilotons of lithium carbonate equivalent volumes in 2026, citing operational friction including the Talison CGP3 fire delay partly offset by higher Wodgina output. The results support a near-term earnings recovery catalyst, though prolonged low lithium pricing and oversupply remain the most immediate risk.

Albemarle Q2 2026 EBITDA more than doubles to $858 million

Albemarle Corp reported second-quarter 2026 net sales up 31% year-over-year and adjusted EBITDA more than doubling to $858 million, with enterprise EBITDA margin expanding to 49%. The company generated $710 million in cash from operations and $638 million in free cash flow, achieving over 80% operating cash conversion. Global lithium demand grew 45% year-over-year through May, driven by strong stationary storage and improving EV growth, with inventories at near-record lows. Albemarle raised its full-year outlook for specialties and is on track to hit the high end of its cost productivity target of $100-150 million. However, a June 9 fire at the Greenbushes CGP3 plant delayed the ramp-up to full production until Q1 2027, leading the company to expect energy storage sales volumes for 2026 to be flat to down 4% year-over-year.

Albemarle Stock Drops 25.5% in a Month Amid Falling Lithium Prices

Albemarle Corporation shares have fallen 25.5% over the past month, underperforming the Zacks Chemical - Diversified industry and the S&P 500. The decline is driven by falling lithium market prices, which have pulled back due to slowing electric vehicle demand in China, an inventory glut, and prospects of increased supply from mine restarts and capacity additions. China's battery giant CATL has reportedly secured a safety production permit to resume operations at its Jianxiawo lithium mine, while Mineral Resources has announced the restart of its Bald Hill lithium mine in Western Australia. Despite the near-term pressure, Albemarle is well-placed to benefit from long-term growth in the battery-grade lithium market, with lithium demand expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 10-20% from 2025 to 2030. The company delivered roughly $450 million in cost and productivity improvements for full-year 2025 and expects additional improvements of $100-$150 million in 2026. Albemarle's operating cash flow was around $1.3 billion in 2025, and it paid down $1.3 billion of outstanding debt in March 2026. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2026 earnings is currently pegged at $13.06, suggesting a year-over-year increase of 1,735.2%. Analysts have upgraded earnings estimates, and the stock's fair value is projected at $212.74, a 56% upside to its current price. Albemarle's narrative projects $6.7 billion in revenue and $1.9 billion in earnings by 2029, requiring 6.8% yearly revenue growth and a roughly $2.3 billion earnings increase from a current loss of $399.6 million. Lithium producers see battery storage as primary growth driver, offsetting EV slowdown

Lithium producers are growing more optimistic about a market recovery as accelerating demand for battery storage systems helps offset a slowdown in electric vehicles, according to comments made at the Fastmarkets Global Lithium, Battery, and Critical Materials Conference in Las Vegas. Fastmarkets CEO Raju Daswani said the period of market overcorrection is over and that energy storage has become a primary driver of growth, with lithium demand for battery storage systems growing at 40% annually. Albemarle's chief commercial officer Eric Norris noted steady growth for battery storage, in contrast to lumpy EV demand, and highlighted that grid storage is much more evenly distributed around the world. Rio Tinto's head of aluminum and lithium, Jérôme Pécresse, said lithium demand in the next two years will be much more balanced between EVs and energy storage.

UBS says lithium bears are watching the wrong number

UBS argues that lithium bears are focused on the wrong metric, as the market’s binding constraint is spodumene feedstock, not total tonnes of supply. Wood Mackenzie’s cautious view hinges on saturating China EV sales and a supply response to higher prices, but UBS counters that refining capacity in China runs ahead of mine output, keeping spodumene volatile and headline supply figures misleading. UBS’s recent China feedback was more bullish than expected, with battery output outpacing EV growth on storage and exports, and a pullback in GFEX futures was driven by confusion over ESS shipment data rather than real demand softening. Near-term forces include a reduction in China’s battery export rebate from 9 percent to 6 percent in April 2026 and its elimination by January 2027, which pulls demand forward, while CATL’s lepidolite mine remains offline with a potential H2 2026 restart of around 40,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent. UBS stays overweight with Buy ratings on Liontown, IGO, Mineral Resources, Albemarle, POSCO, and Patriot Metals.
