PARPÚBLICA Completes 13.7% Stake Purchase in REN from Pontegadea
PARPÚBLICA has completed the purchase of a 13.7% stake in REN - Redes Energéticas Nacionais SGPS from Pontegadea Inversiones, increasing the Portuguese state investment arm's holding in the grid operator. Pontegadea Inversiones, linked to Spanish investor interests, fully exited this portion of its ownership in the Portuguese utility. The transaction tightens public sector influence over REN, a €2.3b integrated utilities group that runs Portugal's electricity and natural gas transmission backbone, and reshapes its shareholder mix. The move sharpens the link between REN and Portuguese energy policy, with the key question being how a stronger state presence interacts with regulated returns, grid investment approvals and REN's role in future hydrogen and green gas infrastructure. The clearest early signals will be formal decisions confirming or extending REN's provisional role in planning Portugal's hydrogen network, alongside upcoming regulator rulings on electricity grid upgrades and allowed returns.
