Prosper Stars & Stripes Shorts Dolby Laboratories on AI Cost Pressure

Prosper Stars & Stripes disclosed in its second-quarter 2026 investor letter that it has shorted Dolby Laboratories, Universal Display Corp and Logitech International on the theme that the AI investment boom is crowding out spending elsewhere. The fund said cost pressures on technology components such as DRAM will push consumer electronics prices higher, hitting back-to-school and holiday spending, the key periods for these companies' end markets, and it expects the forecasts these companies are providing at this time of the year to prove optimistic. It added that the so-called K-shaped economy, in which consumers feel the pressure of rising living costs, will continue to squeeze discretionary purchases, and that rising prices make it nearly impossible to use discounts to stimulate sales. Dolby Laboratories closed at $61.91 per share on September 14, 2026, with a market capitalization of $5.79 billion, a 52-week range of $48.26 to $73.01, a 1.33% return over the past month and a 14.24% loss over the past 52 weeks. The fund's portfolio returned a net 30.1% in the second quarter of 2026, against 21.5% for the Russell 2000 Index and 10.3% for the HFRX Equity Hedge Index, and is up 23.7% year to date versus 22.6% for the Russell 2000 and 9.7% for the HFRI Equity Hedge Index. Twenty-eight hedge fund portfolios held Dolby Laboratories at the end of the second quarter, unchanged from the previous quarter.

The stock traded at US$80.16, with a year-to-date share price return down 34.21% and a one-year total shareholder return decline of 43.72%. A widely followed narrative fair value estimate places the stock at US$128.11, suggesting it is 37.4% undervalued, based on steady revenue expansion, resilient margins, and a future earnings multiple shaped by changing analyst expectations. MACOM and Universal Display Shares Soar Amid Semiconductor Sector Rebound

Shares of MACOM and Universal Display jumped 4.8% and 5.2% respectively as the semiconductor sector rebounded from last week's sharp selloff, fueled by bullish Wall Street updates. Broadcom gained about 4.2% after disclosing multi-year agreements with Apple through 2031 to supply custom ASIC silicon. UBS raised its Q3 DDR contract-pricing forecast to a 32% quarter-on-quarter increase, up from 17%, and reiterated DRAM undersupply until at least the second quarter of 2028. Citi added an upside catalyst watch on Micron, while BofA reiterated a Buy rating with a $1,550 price target, arguing memory represents roughly 35% to 40% of cloud AI capital expenditure yet memory stocks trade at a sub-par 10 times forward price-to-earnings ratio. Goldman's trading desk flagged an oversold buy-the-dip setup after momentum factors fell 24% from their peak, the largest drawdown since the first quarter of 2023. The sector recovery was reinforced by SK Hynix's roughly $28 billion Nasdaq listing the previous week and Samsung's upcoming earnings, keeping the memory super-cycle story in focus.

Hardman Johnston Global Advisors maintained its bullish stance on Universal Display Corporation in its first-quarter 2026 investor letter for the Large Cap Equity Strategy. The firm acknowledged that the stock continued to lag, citing higher computer memory prices driving up mobile phone costs and slowing demand in a key end market, along with broader consumption risks from the war. NXP Semiconductors and Universal Display Shares Fall Amid AI-Chip Selloff

Shares of NXP Semiconductors and Universal Display fell sharply in afternoon trading after a report that South Korea's SK Hynix is slowing its high-bandwidth memory expansion rattled the AI-chip complex. NXP Semiconductors dropped 8.1% and Universal Display declined 6.2%, as the broader memory sector took the brunt of the selloff with Micron falling 11% while logic-heavy Nvidia slipped only about 3.6%. Analysts noted that SK Hynix's move to slow its HBM4 ramp is a margin-driven decision to redirect capacity into conventional DRAM, where shortages have pushed operating margins more than 15 points above HBM's, rather than a signal of cooling AI demand. The selloff was amplified by profit-taking after a parabolic run in memory stocks and a hawkish shift in rate expectations, with traders pricing 50 basis points of Fed hikes by December under new Chair Kevin Warsh. Wedbush characterized the drop as a buying opportunity, citing intact enterprise demand.
