Whirlpool Posts Q2 Loss, Holds Full-Year Outlook on Pricing and Debt Moves

Whirlpool Corporation reported second-quarter net sales of $3.52 billion, down 6.8% year over year, and swung to an ongoing loss of $0.21 per diluted share from a profit of $1.34 a year earlier, while holding its full-year outlook steady. The appliance maker said MDA North America grew net sales 8% quarter over quarter and expanded EBIT margin by 240 basis points on previously announced pricing actions and new product launches, and it announced fresh price increases in Latin America to address margin pressure in Brazil. Whirlpool completed the transition to a $2 billion asset-based lending facility and issued $2 billion in secured bonds, clearing debt maturities until 2028, and an agreement with Arcelik to sell its remaining 25% stake in Beko produced a $139 million gain and $84 million in net cash proceeds during the quarter. Year over year, ongoing EBIT fell 69.1% to $62 million and ongoing EBIT margin dropped to 1.8% from 5.3%, with MDA North America's EBIT margin down 3.2 points to 2.7% on tariff costs, raw material inflation and fuel costs, MDA Latin America's EBIT margin down 3.0 points, and SDA Global's EBIT margin down 5.4 points on planned marketing investment. Canada's Retaliatory Tariffs on U.S. Goods Take Effect

Canada's retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods took effect at 12:01 a.m. on September 8, imposing duties of 15%, 25%, and 50% on about C$27.6 billion ($20 billion) of U.S. imports, including steel, aluminum, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, plastics, and electronics. The measures escalate an 18-month trade dispute following the collapse of negotiations between Ottawa and Washington, and come after the U.S. imposed new 50% duties on Canadian exports in August. U.S. companies to watch include Nucor, Steel Dynamics, Cleveland-Cliffs, Alcoa, Deere, Caterpillar, Whirlpool, Kraft Heinz, General Mills, Eaton, Emerson Electric, Honeywell, International Paper, Dow, LyondellBasell, General Motors, and Ford, among others. Bombardier faces added uncertainty after President Donald Trump threatened to block its aircraft from the U.S. market unless it manufactures in the U.S. The dispute could weigh on Canadian growth, exports, and business investment, with Canadian exports to the U.S. already falling 6.6% in July.

CEOs warn lower-income US consumers are running out of money

CEOs from Kraft Heinz, McDonald's, and Whirlpool are warning that lower-income American consumers are running out of money at the end of the month. Kraft Heinz CEO Steve Cahillane said the company is seeing negative cash flows in lower-income brackets, with consumers dipping into savings, and the company is cutting prices, increasing promotions, and rolling out smaller package sizes. McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski flagged heightened anxiety among consumers, while CFO Ian Borden noted higher gas prices are hitting lower-income households especially hard. Whirlpool CEO Marc Bitzer described a sharp pullback in demand for big-ticket appliances, with discretionary demand down roughly 15%. Credit card balances stood at $1.25 trillion in the first quarter of 2026, auto loan balances climbed to $1.69 trillion, and the personal saving rate fell to just 2.7% in June.

Whirlpool Affirms 2026 Guidance After Q2 Margin Gains

Whirlpool Corporation reported second-quarter 2026 sales of US$3,517 million and net income of US$88 million, and affirmed full-year 2026 guidance calling for about US$15.00 billion in net sales, a GAAP net earnings margin of roughly 1.1%, and GAAP earnings per diluted share of US$2.25 to US$2.75. Management attributed sequential margin improvement to promotional price increases, structural cost reductions, and over 100 new product launches, while reaffirming its operational outlook despite softer demand and higher costs. The reaffirmed guidance places extra weight on the company's ability to deliver promised structural cost savings and margin improvement, especially against a backdrop of suspended dividends and higher interest expense from recent refinancing. Some analysts had already penciled in only about 2% annual revenue growth and US$325.9 million of earnings by 2029, and the Q2 margin story and refinancing impact could either validate their more pessimistic view or force a rethink of Whirlpool's constrained earnings power.

Whirlpool reports Q2 sequential margin improvement, reaffirms operational outlook

Whirlpool Corporation reported second-quarter net sales of $3.5 billion, a 6.8% year-over-year decline, while delivering sequential ongoing EBIT margin improvement of 50 basis points to 1.8%. The company executed a promotional price increase of more than 10% relative to first-quarter prices, effective in late April, which contributed to a 240-basis-point sequential margin expansion in its North America major domestic appliance segment. Full-year revenue guidance was reaffirmed at approximately $15 billion, representing 1.5% growth on a like-for-like basis when excluding the previous year's India business results. Whirlpool also completed the divestiture of its minority stake in Beko Europe B.V. for $128 million in total cash consideration, resulting in roughly $84 million of net cash proceeds and a reported gain of $139 million. The company updated its full-year ongoing earnings per share guidance to a range of $2.50 to $3.00, reflecting an increased interest expense outlook of $350 million following recent secured bond issuances.

Whirlpool Stock Could Be 31.3% Undervalued After Refinancing and Dividend Cut

Whirlpool stock could be 31.3% undervalued following a $2 billion senior secured notes offering, higher expected interest costs, and dividend and guidance cuts. The refinancing replaced cheaper euro-denominated notes with higher-cost debt, while credit rating downgrades from Moody's and Fitch reinforced concerns about future earnings and free cash flow pressure. At a share price of $38.86, the stock has fallen 9.40% over the past seven days and 47.84% year to date, with a one-year total shareholder return down 56.69%. A widely followed narrative places Whirlpool's fair value estimate at $56.55, supported by over 100 new product introductions and a longer-term recovery story, though reliance on mature markets and pressure from lower-cost competitors pose risks to that thesis. The current price-to-earnings ratio of 15.5 times sits above the US Consumer Durables industry average of 13.4 times and the peer average of 14.1 times, even as analysts estimate a fair ratio of 26.9 times.
