Wondershare Technology’s Wu Taibing: AI film and TV going global needs three capabilities; only 5% of short dramas are profitable

Wondershare Technology founder Wu Taibing said in a recent interview with 21st Century Business Herald that the AI film and television industry has not yet entered a period of stable profitability, but AI is significantly lowering the creative threshold and helping China’s film and TV industry overtake on the curve. He pointed out that the proportion of profitable short dramas in the industry is about 5%, and 90% of productions have yet to cover combined production and promotion costs. The biggest competitors for domestic creators going overseas are other domestic peers. Wu Taibing believes that AI film and TV going global needs to build three capabilities: developing compliant models and tools adapted to different markets, forming a stable capacity for producing premium content, and solving the challenges of cross-cultural expression and localized operations. In 2025, Wondershare Technology’s R&D investment was 485 million yuan, accounting for 31.65% of revenue. Server costs rose 78.30% year-on-year to 80.117 million yuan, mainly driven by AI computing power demand. Revenue from video creative products reached 1.022 billion yuan, making up 66.65% of total revenue, while AI-native application revenue exceeded 130 million yuan, up over 90% year-on-year. The company recently launched the ‘Wanju Going Global Creation and Investment Plan’, partnering with nearly ten collaborators to invest in AI short drama projects in the form of computing power tokens, and sharing revenue according to agreements. The computing power investment for a regular premium AI short drama is about 100,000 yuan.

Wondershare Technology Launches "Wanxing Theater" Platform: An Ad Short Drama Can Cost Just Tens of Yuan and Be Completed in One Hour

At the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference, Wondershare Technology showcased its newly upgraded one-stop creation platform, "Wanxing Theater." Product Marketing Director Sun Jialiman stated that a high-quality ad short drama can be completed in as little as one hour, at a cost of just tens of yuan. The platform introduces three major upgrades: a director-level storyboard agent, an infinite canvas plus agent creative assistant, and an ad drama creation mode. In the ad drama mode, users only need to input product images and key selling points, and the system will automatically generate three creative plans and scripts in different styles, outputting a finished film within one hour. Wondershare Technology emphasizes that its core advantage lies in engineering and full-chain integration. Leveraging the technical expertise of its professional editing software, which has over 400 million overseas users, it seamlessly connects AIGC generation capabilities with a cloud-based editing backend, enabling automatic synchronization and updates of the finished film after storyboard modifications. The dark horse short drama "Destiny Delta" from this year's Spring Festival season is one of the platform's representative works, with total online views reaching 270 million. Wondershare Technology is already collaborating with multiple professional film and television production companies to explore AI filmmaking.
