Haneda Airport in Tokyo unveiled its new north-side passenger terminal extension today, ahead of its operational opening this September, with six boarding gates to accommodate steadily expanding air travel. The extension of Terminal 1 marks the largest expansion since the main building opened in September 1993. Japan Airport Terminal, which manages Haneda Airport, said the structure uses about 1,800 cubic meters of steel and wood to help reduce environmental impact. Inside the building are lounges, a children's area, and the iino driverless vehicle service, which carries up to four passengers free of charge. Japan's government aims to attract 60 million foreign tourists by 2030. Haneda Airport's passenger volume last year surged past 90 million for the first time, and aircraft movements reached about 490,000 flights, already at the airport's capacity ceiling. To address congestion and flight delays, Japanese airlines announced that starting this September, domestic passengers must check in and drop baggage at least 30 minutes before departure, up from 20 minutes. Kumiko Saito, an executive officer at Japan Airlines, said that because the distance from security screening has increased, passengers need to arrive earlier to complete check-in, and asked for cooperation so aircraft depart on time. Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism said on-time performance, defined as departure within 15 minutes of the scheduled time, continues to decline, averaging 83% for the top 10 airlines in fiscal 2025.

Record heavy rain in Japan has left around 7,000 passengers stranded at Narita Airport and killed at least 4 people in Chiba Prefecture. Parts of Chiba Prefecture received more than 360 millimetres of rain within 24 hours, flooding roads and railway lines, leaving nearly 25,000 homes without power, and keeping several major highways closed, including the route linking Narita Airport with central Tokyo. Chiba Governor Toshihito Kumagai said the event was extremely severe and abnormal, even compared with weather previously seen in Japan. Japan Airlines said some flights may be delayed, but no cancellations are currently expected.

It was learned on the 12th that Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways are expected to lower their international fuel surcharges for tickets issued in September and October. For flights from Japan to North America and Europe, the surcharge will drop to between 50,000 and 55,000 yen, down from the record high of 65,000 yen for the July–August period. The decline is driven by a fall in jet fuel prices, which had spiked due to turmoil in the Middle East, and surcharges on routes other than North America and Europe will also be reduced. The surcharge is calculated based on the average jet fuel market price and exchange rate over the most recent two months.

Japan Airlines reported its first-quarter results for the fiscal year ending March 2027. Quarterly profit fell 80.2 percent year-on-year to 5.3 billion yen, hit by surging fuel costs amid heightened Middle East tensions, but the full-year earnings forecast was left unchanged. Revenue rose 11.2 percent to 523.7 billion yen, a record high for the first quarter. International passenger yield climbed 16.9 percent to 19.6 yen per kilometer, while domestic yield rose 6.0 percent to 20.7 yen, reflecting stronger unit prices. Fuel expenses swelled 58.4 percent to 148.8 billion yen. However, EBIT from the miles, finance and commerce business grew 17.6 percent to 12 billion yen, helping to keep the group in the black. Combined EBIT from the full-service carrier and low-cost carrier businesses also recovered from a loss in April to exceed the initial plan by June. The recent strengthening of the yen is also seen as a cost relief factor. After the earnings release, the stock closed 1.24 percent higher at 2,979.5 yen.

Japan Airlines submitted recurrence prevention measures to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism on the 17th in response to a cabin crew drinking problem. After a domestic flight was delayed in May due to drinking that violated operational rules, the measures include self-regulated alcohol restraint and the consolidation of health condition reporting channels. The airline analyzed that its previous ban on drinking at accommodation locations did not lead to a change in awareness, and will introduce self-check education on drinking precautions to encourage self-awareness. It plans to lift the drinking ban at accommodation locations once it determines that the measures have been completed.
