A.O. Smith Q2 Margin Compression and China Weakness Offset North America Growth

A.O. Smith reported second-quarter results that beat profit expectations but saw margins compress and China sales drop sharply, offsetting strong North America growth. Revenue was flat year on year at $1.00 billion, slightly above analyst estimates of $990.2 million, while adjusted earnings per share of $1.03 beat the consensus of $0.92 by 11.5%. Operating margin fell to 16.7% from 20.4% a year ago, as higher input costs and a 28% local-currency sales decline in China weighed on performance. The company lowered its full-year revenue guidance to $3.93 billion and adjusted EPS guidance to $3.78, citing continued softness in North America residential water heaters and inflationary pressures. Management highlighted a 21% surge in the North America boiler business and progress in stabilizing residential water heater market share, but noted that a strategic review of the China operations is underway with an outcome expected next quarter.

A. O. Smith CEO Stephen Shafer Adds Chairman Role as Wheeler Retires

A. O. Smith announced that Executive Chairman Kevin J. Wheeler retired from his executive role on July 1, 2026, with President and CEO Stephen M. Shafer assuming the additional position of chairman while Wheeler remains on the board. Shafer, who brings experience from 3M, McKinsey, and Ford, now holds the consolidated roles of chairman, president, and CEO. The leadership change comes alongside a recent full-year 2026 guidance reduction tied primarily to ongoing China headwinds, framing the main question for Shafer's expanded role: how effectively the company can execute product and digital initiatives while contending with softer Rest of World demand and a flat North American market. The company's investment narrative projects $4.3 billion in revenue and $611.6 million in earnings by 2029, with a fair value estimate of $70.45 per share, representing a 15% upside to its current price.
