Rocket Lab CEO Says Iridium Deal Won't Compete With Starlink

Rocket Lab CEO Peter Beck said the company's planned $8 billion acquisition of Iridium Communications will expand its satellite communications business without directly competing with Elon Musk's Starlink or Amazon's Leo. In a CNN interview, Beck emphasized Iridium's L-band spectrum, which can penetrate bad weather and buildings, and said Rocket Lab could eventually provide something new and unique that hasn't been seen before. He also highlighted defense opportunities and the ability to replace damaged satellites within hours using a low-Earth orbit constellation. The news comes as Rocket Lab was onboarded to the United States Space Force's NITE-STAR program, a $981 million contract vehicle supporting space test and training infrastructure.

Space Force Awards $60M to Break SpaceX Orbital Monopoly

The U.S. Space Force has awarded five $12 million contracts under a $60 million effort to prove non-SpaceX satellites can plug into the Space Data Network backbone that SpaceX built under a $2.29 billion award in May 2026. The move comes as SpaceX completed its 100th launch of 2026, pushing the Starlink constellation past 11,000 satellites. L3Harris Technologies, AST SpaceMobile, Rocket Lab, Viasat, and Iridium Communications are directly positioned to benefit from the Pentagon's push to avoid single-vendor dependency in space. Rocket Lab's $8 billion all-stock acquisition of Iridium, announced June 28 and targeted to close mid-2027, would create the only vertically integrated public SpaceX alternative, folding in 66 operational satellites and roughly $870 million in annual revenue.

Rocket Lab Posts Record Q2 Revenue and Space Force Contract

Rocket Lab reported record second-quarter revenue of US$234.07 million, a record US$2.36 billion backlog, and a US$397 million U.S. Space Force Flatellites contract, while advancing its Neutron rocket and progressing the planned Iridium acquisition. The company also raised US$1.06 billion via at-the-market equity, with capacity to sell up to US$1.94 billion more, to fund the Iridium deal and its M&A pipeline. Neutron's inaugural launch window may slip into 2027, and integration of Mynaric and Motiv, closing and scaling Iridium, and cash burn remain key catalysts and pressure points. Simply Wall St community members have 28 fair value estimates for Rocket Lab, ranging from US$16.25 to US$150 per share, reflecting wide disagreement over a business that is still unprofitable and funding acquisitions with multi-billion-dollar equity programs.

Rocket Lab Clears US Antitrust Review for Iridium Acquisition

Rocket Lab said the Hart-Scott-Rodino waiting period on its proposed acquisition of Iridium Communications expired yesterday, clearing US antitrust review. The company holds a $3.6 billion 364-day senior secured bridge term loan committed from Deutsche Bank and Wells Fargo, and intends to replace it with permanent debt and equity. Rocket Lab is asking lenders to let Iridium's existing term loan facility, $1.775 billion outstanding at June 30, stay in place after closing at what it calls more attractive rates than the bridge, though there is no assurance the consents come through. The equity piece is a replacement distribution agreement allowing sales of up to $1.94 billion of stock at the market, carrying forward the unsold amount from a May 20 program that has been terminated. Rocket Lab stresses no shares beyond that unsold balance are on offer, and if the deal falls through the proceeds would fund future growth and possible acquisitions instead.

Rocket Lab to Acquire Iridium Communications

Rocket Lab has agreed to acquire Iridium Communications, aiming to combine Iridium's satellite communications network with its own launch and satellite manufacturing operations. The planned deal is intended to expand Rocket Lab's role beyond launch services into broader space applications using Iridium's existing infrastructure. Both companies expect the transaction to reshape their positions in satellite services, with potential effects on how rivals compete for government and commercial customers. The key reference point is the agreed US$54 per share collar structured acquisition price and whether the transaction closes on the mid 2027 timetable, given the required shareholder and regulatory approvals. Investors can also track Iridium's quarterly dividend decisions, including the US$0.15 per share payout scheduled for September 30, 2026, as a signal on capital return while the deal is pending.

Rocket Lab CEO Says Iridium Deal Avoids Broadband Battle With Musk and Bezos

Rocket Lab CEO Peter Beck said the company's planned $8 billion acquisition of Iridium Communications will focus on space services outside the consumer broadband market dominated by Elon Musk's Starlink and Jeff Bezos' Amazon Leo. Speaking on Rocket Lab's second-quarter earnings call, Beck said Iridium's L-band spectrum is the wrong kind for broadband and that competing would be difficult because the two most wealthiest people in the world are going after that. Instead, Rocket Lab plans to expand Iridium into satellite IoT, direct-to-device connectivity, positioning, navigation and timing, defense, aviation and maritime safety. Rocket Lab reported second-quarter revenue of $234.07 million, beating the consensus estimate of $231.35 million, with a loss of 8 cents per share versus the expected 7 cents, and guided third-quarter revenue between $250 million and $265 million, above analysts' estimate of $238.53 million.

Rocket Lab Posts Record Revenue and $2.36 Billion Backlog as Neutron Delay Weighs on Shares

Rocket Lab reported record second-quarter revenue of $234 million, up 62% year over year, and its backlog swelled to $2.36 billion, yet shares fell nearly 10% in after-hours trading after CEO Peter Beck said the launch window for the Neutron rocket is narrowing. The company secured more than $1 billion in new business during the quarter, including $581 million in new awards and $437 million in new launch bookings, while Space Systems revenue grew 39% sequentially. Beck is prioritizing Neutron reusability and repeatable cadence over a rushed maiden flight, aiming to build a full-stack space platform that will be further strengthened by the pending acquisition of Iridium, which generates roughly $870 million in annual recurring revenue. Cantor Fitzgerald raised its price target to $122 from $96, citing the record results and the Iridium deal. Adjusted EBITDA loss narrowed to $8.8 million, and third-quarter revenue is guided to between $250 million and $265 million.

SpaceX prioritizes Starlink launches, limiting Falcon 9 capacity for commercial customers

SpaceX is increasingly dedicating its Falcon 9 launch schedule to expanding its Starlink satellite network, leaving fewer missions available for outside customers and creating a bottleneck across the commercial space industry. Starlink missions accounted for roughly 79% of Falcon 9 launches so far in 2026, up from 54% in 2020, and multiple satellite operators have been informed that Falcon 9 capacity is effectively sold out until 2028 or 2029 as SpaceX shifts focus toward its next-generation Starship rocket. The strategy reflects the economics of SpaceX's business, with analysts noting that using launch capacity for Starlink satellites generates greater long-term value than carrying commercial payloads because each launch expands a satellite network that has become the company's largest revenue source, generating an estimated $11.4 billion in revenue in 2025 compared with about $4.1 billion from launch services. The launch squeeze could strengthen the outlook for companies developing alternatives to SpaceX, including Rocket Lab, while potentially delaying revenue for satellite operators that rely on third-party rockets to deploy spacecraft. Competitors have struggled to close the gap, with Blue Origin's New Glenn grounded following a launchpad explosion and United Launch Alliance's Vulcan sidelined due to technical issues, while Rocket Lab is developing its reusable Neutron rocket and expanding into satellite manufacturing through its planned acquisition of Iridium.

Rocket Lab's Neutron Rocket Progress Is the Key Number in Its August 10 Earnings

Rocket Lab will report second-quarter earnings on August 10, and the most critical figure for investors will be any update on the Neutron medium-lift reusable rocket, including commercial launch contract bookings or a timeline for its first hot-fire test. The company, founded by Peter Beck, has seen its stock fall more than 13% this year despite improved revenue and narrowing losses, largely because the Neutron launch was pushed back to later in 2026 after a tank failure in January. Neutron is expected to generate $50 million to $100 million per launch, far more than the $7.5 million to $8.5 million from its Electron rocket, and delays risk ceding ground to competitors like SpaceX's Falcon 9 and Relativity Space's Terran R. Rocket Lab recently secured a $266 million multi-launch contract with the U.S. Space Force for its modified HASTE vehicle and is pursuing an $8 billion acquisition of Iridium to become a vertically integrated space operator. However, the company remains unprofitable and trades at around 49 times trailing sales, leaving the stock vulnerable to sharp declines on any negative news.

Rocket Lab to Turn Profitable and Free-Cash-Flow-Positive in 2027 After Iridium Acquisition

Rocket Lab is predicted to become profitable and free-cash-flow-positive in 2027 following its announced $8 billion acquisition of satellite company Iridium. Over the last twelve months, Rocket Lab reported a $183 million GAAP loss and negative $316 million in free cash flow, while Iridium posted a $93 million GAAP profit and $288 million in positive free cash flow. Analysts forecast that by 2027, Rocket Lab's losses will shrink to $24 million with $44 million in positive free cash flow, and Iridium is expected to earn $161 million with $381 million in free cash flow, resulting in a combined $137 million profit and $425 million in free cash flow. The deal, half paid in stock at $54 per share, would add about 74.1 million shares to Rocket Lab's current 598.2 million, yielding estimated per-share earnings of $0.20. Rocket Lab CEO Peter Beck sees Iridium as the company's answer to SpaceX's Starlink, providing direct-to-device satellite communications, positioning, navigation, timing, and Internet of Things services.

Rocket Lab Wins Its Largest-Ever $266 Million Space Force Contract

Rocket Lab Corporation announced its largest launch contract in corporate history, a $266 million multi-launch arrangement with the United States Space Force's Rocket Systems Launch Program. The deal covers 12 suborbital missile-defense launches from the Pacific Spaceport Complex in Kodiak, Alaska, with an option for six additional missions. Despite the news, shares gave back early gains and closed lower, reflecting broader concerns over balance sheet transformations and industry liquidity shifts. The stock has fallen more than 55% from its late-May all-time high of $151, erasing over $45 billion in market capitalization, and is trading 14.88% lower year-to-date. The decline accelerated after the company announced an $8 billion cash-and-stock acquisition of Iridium Communications, which created merger arbitrage pressure even as Rocket Lab reported a 63.5% year-over-year revenue increase to $200.3 million in the first quarter of 2026 and a backlog that more than doubled to $2.2 billion.

The DCF model estimates an intrinsic value of roughly US$90.46 per share, compared with a current price near US$55.72, implying significant upside from projected free cash flow of about US$323 million. However, earnings-based multiples tell a different story, with Iridium trading at a price-to-earnings ratio of about 55.8 times, well above the telecom industry average of roughly 16.7 times and a tailored fair P/E of about 18.8 times. The stock has surged 213.7% year to date, and broader valuation checks score just 2 out of 6, leaning toward expensive territory despite the DCF discount. The pending Rocket Lab deal, valued at US$8 billion and effectively anchoring expectations around US$54 per share, adds complexity as investors weigh integration risks and the potential for stronger long-term cash flows from IoT expansion.

Planet Labs Stock Soars on $8 Billion Space Mega-Deal Frenzy

Planet Labs shares jumped as much as 12% on Monday, potentially driven by a major acquisition elsewhere in the space sector rather than company-specific news. The catalyst appears to be Rocket Lab's announcement that it will acquire Iridium Communications in an $8 billion cash-and-stock transaction. Rocket Lab shares rose about 10%, while Iridium surged more than 20% following the news. The acquisition gives Rocket Lab control of Iridium's global satellite communications network, wireless spectrum licenses and government customer relationships, accelerating Rocket Lab's transformation from a launch provider into a vertically integrated space company similar to the model pioneered by SpaceX. Although Planet Labs was not involved in the transaction, investors may be extrapolating a broader message that space assets are becoming increasingly valuable strategic infrastructure, raising questions about what a unique Earth-observation constellation might be worth to a larger aerospace, defense or data company.
