Spire Global Wins $28 Million NOAA Contract for Hyperspectral Microwave Sounding

Spire Global, Inc. has been awarded a two-year, $28 million contract by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to advance hyperspectral microwave sounding technology toward operational use for weather forecasting. Under the agreement, Spire will build and qualify a matured satellite and hyperspectral microwave sounder payload through flight readiness, tailored to an orbit supporting NOAA's forecasting needs and enabling analysis of the impact on numerical weather prediction and resilience to radio frequency interference. This award follows Spire's launch of its first-of-its-kind HyMS demonstrator in January 2026 and a $3 million contract extension from NOAA earlier this month for continued evaluation of demonstrator data. The new agreement expands that work, targeting operational capability no later than 2030, and represents a step toward demonstrating that advanced hyperspectral microwave sounding can be delivered from a smaller, commercially developed satellite platform.

Spire reaffirms 2026 revenue outlook amid NOAA contract talks

Spire Global reaffirmed its full-year 2026 revenue guidance of $75 million to $85 million while negotiating an eight-figure contract with a U.S. government agency tied to its Hyperspectral Microwave Sounder capability. Second quarter revenue was $18 million, up 16% year-over-year on a core basis excluding the divested maritime business, and adjusted EBITDA was negative $8.6 million, a 16% improvement from a year earlier. The company said over 85% of the midpoint of its revenue guidance was under contract as of the end of July, and it expects a radio occultation bridge award from NOAA in August that will be larger than last year's $11.2 million. Non-GAAP gross margin fell to 38% from 52% a year ago, primarily due to the cancellation of the WildFireSat contract, and Spire ended the quarter with about $92 million in cash and no debt.

SA Asks: What's the best satellite stock right now?

Seeking Alpha analysts Dhierin Bechai and Daniel Jones shared their picks for the best satellite stock following Rocket Lab's planned $8 billion acquisition of Iridium Communications. Bechai noted that many space companies with satellite exposure have already seen significant price increases, and highlighted emerging Earth observation firms Planet Labs, Satellogic, and Spire Global as more interesting satellite stocks at this moment. Jones said Iridium is undeniably the best satellite prospect right now due to its fundamental health, and that its tie to Rocket Lab through the half-stock buyout should limit volatility, making it suitable for defensive investors.
