Aon Forecasts 9.5% Rise in 2027 Employer Health Costs

Aon plc expects U.S. employer health-care costs to rise 9.5% in 2027, pushing average plan costs above $19,000 per employee. The forecast, based on its Health Value Initiative database covering more than 1,100 employers, 7.9 million employees and $135 billion of 2026 health-care spending, points to higher medical service use, chronic illness, expensive claims and prescription drugs, especially specialty medicines and GLP-1 therapies, as key drivers. Employers' average cost rose 8.8% in 2026 to $14,432 per employee, while employee payroll contributions increased 6.4% to $3,130, and Aon says employers now fund about 82% of total plan costs. The projected increase would mark a fourth straight year of employer health-cost growth close to double digits, with total plan costs up 8.3% in 2026 to $17,562 per employee. Aon's Health Solutions generated $818 million of second-quarter 2026 revenues and 5% organic growth, while Willis Towers Watson's Health business posted 8% organic growth in the same period, and UnitedHealth Group and Centene Corporation are managing medical costs through pricing and benefit design.

UnitedHealth faces shareholder suit over governance failures

UnitedHealth Group is facing an amended shareholder lawsuit accusing the insurer of knowing about serious governance issues and doing little to ensure compliance, leading to significant losses in stock value. The suit was filed in a Minnesota federal court by the Employees’ Retirement System of the State of Rhode Island and Länsförsäkringar Fondförvaltning AB, a Swedish asset manager. Plaintiffs blame the board and senior company officers, alleging the company built its industry-leading earnings on a foundation of systemic wrongdoing and illegality, including defrauding the federal Medicare program, denying medically necessary care, deceiving a federal court, violating patient privacy laws, unlawfully suppressing competition, and manipulating earnings. The suit contends that defendants issued false and misleading statements in SEC filings, on earnings calls, and in four successive proxy statements, keeping the stock trading at artificially inflated prices while the company repurchased billions of dollars of its own shares. UnitedHealth reached an all-time closing high of $599.78 on November 11, 2024, and closed Wednesday at $405.59, after closing as low as $259.02 on March 27 of this year.

Elizabeth Warren pushes bill to break up UnitedHealth and CVS vertical integration

Senator Elizabeth Warren is pushing bipartisan legislation to force the breakup of vertically integrated healthcare giants like UnitedHealth Group and CVS Health, arguing their control over insurance, pharmacies, and providers drives up patient costs. The Patients Before Monopolies Act, reintroduced in May with Senator Josh Hawley, would ban common ownership of insurers and pharmacies and require divestiture within one year. Warren highlighted how UnitedHealth’s UnitedHealthcare and Optum units link insurance to pharmacy services, and said the same consolidation applies to CVS Health. The bill targets the three major pharmacy benefit managers—UnitedHealth, CVS Health, and Cigna—which supporters say control every link in the prescription drug delivery chain.

US defers over $1 billion in Medicaid payments to California and Minnesota

CMS is deferring approximately $867.5 million in federal Medicaid payments to California and $199 million to Minnesota after financial reviews identified claims requiring additional scrutiny before federal matching funds are released. The payments are not being permanently withheld, and both states will have the opportunity to submit documentation demonstrating the claims comply with federal Medicaid requirements. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz called the move political retribution, arguing the administration was punishing children, seniors, and people with disabilities rather than fraudsters, while California Governor Gavin Newsom called it a recycled political stunt and said the state would collaborate with CMS in good faith efforts to combat fraud.

U.S. stocks were mixed, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average rising to a one-week high while the Nasdaq 100 fell to a one-week low, as a selloff in chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks weighed on the broader market. The iShares Semiconductor ETF dropped more than 2%, with Sandisk down over 8% and ARM Holdings down over 7%, following a 6% plunge in South Korea's Kospi Index driven by sharp losses in SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics. UnitedHealth Group jumped 4% after reporting second-quarter adjusted earnings per share of $6.38, well above the consensus of $4.89, and raising its full-year adjusted EPS estimate to $19.50 to $20.00, while Abbott Laboratories surged more than 11% after lifting its full-year adjusted EPS forecast to a range of $5.45 to $5.60. Stronger-than-expected U.S. economic data, including a drop in weekly initial jobless claims to a 10-week low of 208,000 and a Philadelphia Fed business outlook survey rising to a 4.5-year high of 41.4, pushed the 10-year Treasury yield up 3 basis points to 4.58%. WTI crude oil prices rose nearly 1% after the U.S. launched fresh airstrikes on Iran and struck a sanctioned Iranian oil tanker in the Persian Gulf, with President Trump pledging to intensify bombardment until Iran stops attacking ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

UnitedHealth stock jumps on Q2 earnings, raises full-year outlook

UnitedHealth Group reported second quarter earnings on Thursday, raising its full-year outlook alongside $112 billion in quarterly revenue, sending its stock higher. Mizuho Americas healthcare equity strategist Jared Holz called it the best quarter out of the company and possibly the entire managed care industry in three to four years, noting Medicare Advantage is in a really good spot. He added that even assuming 20% annual earnings growth, well above the historical low-to-mid teens, the stock is trading at 15 to 16 times a 2028 number. The read across for other companies, according to Holz, is that Medicare Advantage is where you want to be, while commercial insurance and Medicaid remain more challenged.

Magellan Fund Says UnitedHealth Recovery Bolstered by Strong Results and Margin Focus

Magellan Global Opportunities Fund highlighted UnitedHealth Group as a top contributor in the second quarter of 2026, citing a recovery driven by strong first-quarter results. The medical care ratio improved to 83.9% from 84.8% a year earlier, prompting management to raise full-year 2026 adjusted earnings per share guidance. The fund noted that UnitedHealth prioritized margin recovery over membership growth, including trimming Medicare Advantage membership and restoring operational discipline at Optum Health. Softer industry-wide medical cost trends and a larger-than-proposed 2027 Medicare Advantage rate increase further supported sentiment. UnitedHealth shares closed at $418.52 on July 15, 2026, with a one-month return of 4.38% and a 52-week gain of 45.28%, giving the company a market capitalization of $380.08 billion.

UnitedHealth rallies premarket while chip stocks retreat despite TSMC’s record earnings

U.S. stock index futures were mixed on Thursday as UnitedHealth Group jumped 7.6% in premarket trading after reporting stronger-than-expected second-quarter results, while semiconductor stocks fell despite Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. posting a record quarterly profit. UnitedHealth reported adjusted earnings of $6.38 per share, comfortably ahead of analyst estimates, and revenue that also exceeded forecasts. TSMC’s second-quarter profit surged 77% year-on-year to a record level, with earnings per share of $4.31 beating estimates of $3.80, but its shares fell about 4% as investors weighed an expanded capital expenditure plan and potential near-term margin pressure. The cautious reaction spread across the chip sector, with Nvidia slipping 1.3%, and AMD, Intel, and Micron Technology falling between 1.9% and 2.7%. Abbott Laboratories climbed 4.4% after beating expectations on both revenue and earnings, while GE Aerospace slipped 4.3% despite topping Wall Street estimates, and U.S. Bancorp declined 2.4% even after reporting record quarterly revenue and earnings that exceeded expectations.
