Artificial intelligence, developed to boost efficiency, is becoming a pressure pushing up the cost of living in the United States, with households spending an average of over 375 dollars more per year due to surging energy, chip, and construction material costs driven by the AI investment wave, which is expected to reach around 750 billion dollars in 2026. Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics, estimates that this impact has added about 0.2 percentage points to inflation. Household electricity prices in 2025 rose twice as fast as normal and were still about 4 percent higher than the previous year during the first five months of 2026, while wholesale prices for semiconductors and electronic components in June surged 26 percent from a year earlier. This led Apple to raise prices on some models by about 20 percent, Microsoft to increase Xbox prices by roughly 25 percent, and Sony to hike PlayStation prices. Microsoft also raised Microsoft 365 subscription prices by as much as 43 percent after adding the AI Copilot feature. Furthermore, the rush to build data centers is driving up demand for copper and construction labor, with construction wages growing faster than the average, which could worsen housing affordability in the future.
