BYD Co Ltd Class ABYD targets 2.5M vehicle exports by 2027, nearly doubling 2026 guidance, indicating strong overseas demand.
BYD is targeting overseas shipments of more than 2.5 million vehicles in 2027, according to Reuters, which cited notes from Deutsche Bank and Citi following a group meeting with the Chinese electric vehicle maker's management. For 2026, BYD management guided overseas shipments to reach 1.9 million to 2 million vehicles, close to double last year's level. Management indicated that shipping constraints held back export volumes this year and that the numbers could otherwise have been higher. Deutsche Bank attributed the 2027 export target to BYD's ability to capture more overseas market share, a larger fleet of vessels built specifically for car transport, and an increasing number of factories outside China. BYD's Hungarian facility is on track to start production sometime in the November-to-December window, and the company is weighing where else it might establish manufacturing operations abroad. Making vehicles locally would allow BYD to bypass the European Union's approximately 27% duty on battery electric vehicles as well as Brazil's 34% import tariff. Citi calculated the per-vehicle benefit at upward of 40,000 yuan ($5,961), a figure management considers sufficient to cover the costs associated with ramping up new plants. On the domestic front, BYD has set its sights on capturing 25% of China's passenger-car market; as of July its share stood at 18%, a sharp rise from the 8% it held at the beginning of this year. Deutsche Bank also noted that BYD has set a target of installing 90,000 flash-charging stations in total by 2028, with the rollout phased as 20,000 units before year-end 2026, an additional 30,000 through 2027, and a final tranche of 40,000 in 2028.
