Brent crude surged 3.5% to $91.30 a barrel and West Texas Intermediate climbed 3.7% to $86.49 after U.S. forces struck Iranian missile launchers on Larak Island near the Strait of Hormuz, prompting Iranian retaliation with ballistic missiles and drones against U.S. installations in Jordan. With no active diplomatic talks and the June negotiation framework expired, Strait traffic has dropped to roughly five ships per day. Exxon generated $14.5 billion in second-quarter earnings, while Chevron posted $12.1 billion in earnings and 20% production growth, and remains the only major U.S. oil company with a significant Venezuelan presence. Analysts suggest the latest jump may be another geopolitical risk premium rather than a new oil shock, unless Iran successfully closes the Strait or causes sustained damage to Gulf infrastructure.
