Lee Jae-myung and Trump cite progress on $350 billion South Korea-US investment project
South Korean President Lee Jae-myung and US President Donald Trump agreed that discussions on a strategic investment project between the two countries have made significant progress, after the two met for 30 minutes on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly yesterday. Wi Sung-lac, South Korea's national security adviser, said the two leaders also agreed to strengthen cooperation and continue discussions on various issues under the joint statement issued after their summit last November, including nuclear fuel reprocessing, nuclear-powered submarines, shipbuilding, and the transfer of wartime operational control of military forces from the United States to South Korea. Trump also reaffirmed his readiness to open negotiations with North Korea again, and the two leaders agreed to maintain close contact to advance the peace process. The meeting came after South Korea's Ministry of Industry reported to legislators yesterday on implementation plans under the two countries' 350 billion dollar investment package, which includes a gas-fired power plant in Texas identified as possibly the first investment project under the package, as well as the possibility of investment in nuclear energy and a liquefied natural gas project in Alaska. Wi said President Lee also views the US-China summit scheduled for Thursday as important for developments in the region, including South Korea-China relations, and expressed hope that the meeting will be successful.

Trump Threatens to Annihilate Iran as US Envoy Pushes Ceasefire Deal Ahead of Midterms
US President Donald Trump warned that he could annihilate Iran if no deal is reached to end the war, but also signalled that an agreement could come soon, amid intense diplomacy at the United Nations. Speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York, Trump said the situation with Iran could end immediately after the November 3 midterm elections, or perhaps sooner. Iran's military dismissed Trump's remarks as mere propaganda and affirmed its full readiness to respond to any aggressor. Meanwhile, US envoy Steve Witkoff revealed that the United States and Iran held lengthy talks on Tuesday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly through mediators shuttling between the two sides throughout the day, and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi met with Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, who has spent months trying to de-escalate the conflict. A senior Iranian official told Reuters that Tehran sent its latest proposal to Washington through mediators last week and could open the Strait of Hormuz to shipping in the Arabian Gulf within seven days if its demands are met. Oil markets eased somewhat after sources disclosed that Saudi Arabia has begun restarting operations on the East-West pipeline and could resume oil exports from the Red Sea port of Yanbu within a few hours, albeit at reduced volumes.
