Rocket Lab USA Inc.Neutron rocket delays and tank failure risk ceding ground to competitors.
Rocket Lab will report second-quarter earnings on August 10, and the most critical figure for investors will be any update on the Neutron medium-lift reusable rocket, including commercial launch contract bookings or a timeline for its first hot-fire test. The company, founded by Peter Beck, has seen its stock fall more than 13% this year despite improved revenue and narrowing losses, largely because the Neutron launch was pushed back to later in 2026 after a tank failure in January. Neutron is expected to generate $50 million to $100 million per launch, far more than the $7.5 million to $8.5 million from its Electron rocket, and delays risk ceding ground to competitors like SpaceX's Falcon 9 and Relativity Space's Terran R. Rocket Lab recently secured a $266 million multi-launch contract with the U.S. Space Force for its modified HASTE vehicle and is pursuing an $8 billion acquisition of Iridium to become a vertically integrated space operator. However, the company remains unprofitable and trades at around 49 times trailing sales, leaving the stock vulnerable to sharp declines on any negative news.
