Samsung Electronics Co LtdStock fell 8% and 6.25% on profit-taking despite strong earnings beat, as investors sold after massive year-to-date gains.
Samsung Electronics shares fell sharply despite reporting a preliminary operating profit of about $58 billion for the April–June quarter, a 1,800% jump that beat analyst expectations by 6% and surpassed quarterly profits at both Apple and Nvidia. The stock dropped 8% on Tuesday and another 6.25% on Wednesday in Seoul, extending a selloff that also hit rival SK Hynix, which fell nearly 5% on Tuesday and 6% on Wednesday. Analysts pointed to profit-taking after Samsung shares surged 116% year-to-date and more than 350% over the past year, while some investors may have been disappointed that the results only modestly exceeded lofty AI-driven expectations. The volatility comes as SK Hynix prepares to list on the Nasdaq this Friday, aiming to raise almost $30 billion in what would be the second-largest U.S. offering ever, surpassing Alibaba's $21.8 billion raise in 2014.
