The SEC and FINRA have abolished the pattern day trader rule, eliminating the $25,000 equity minimum and trade-counting limits for retail margin accounts and replacing them with a $2,000 Regulation T minimum and risk-based intraday margin. The change, effective June 4, allows millions of smaller retail traders to day trade without restriction. Robinhood, whose average account balance was around $4,000 in 2024 with roughly one-quarter of accounts below the old threshold, stands to benefit from increased trading activity and potential upgrades to margin accounts and Gold subscriptions. CEO Vlad Tenev said the company worked alongside regulators to make this happen, noting it is exactly what Robinhood was built for. The move follows an 84% year-over-year jump in Robinhood's average daily equities trading volume in May.
