SK Hynix IncSK Hynix expanding domestic production facilities, widening lead over China in memory chips.
South Korea's central bank expects the country to expand its advantage over China in the memory chip market, as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix accelerate the expansion of domestic production facilities. New plants set to begin operations by 2028 will add about 600,000 wafers per month in capacity. Meanwhile, Chinese manufacturer CXMT is likely to increase its capacity to about 600,000 wafers per month from the current 300,000. However, the Bank of Korea (BOK) notes that these figures do not reflect actual production volumes, as CXMT still faces yield and technology constraints, with actual shipment share of only 8% of the global market, compared to a theoretical capacity share of 15%. China's expansion comes amid a global chip shortage that has pushed prices to record highs. CXMT raised nearly $10 billion from its IPO in July, and YMTC aims to raise $4.6 billion through a domestic share sale. Nevertheless, the BOK believes South Korea will maintain its edge in advanced chips, as U.S. export controls limit China's access to technology.
