Tesla IncMilestone of 10 million EVs built signals strong cumulative demand and production capability, though near-term sales are down.

Tesla has built its 10 millionth electric vehicle, the company announced on social media early Thursday. The milestone comes six years after Tesla produced its one millionth vehicle. Reaching 10 million units puts Tesla halfway to one of four core product goals tied to CEO Elon Musk's $1 trillion pay package, which requires the company to build 20 million vehicles by 2035. Tesla has not yet sold 2 million vehicles in a single year, and at its current pace the 20 million target may not be met until the early 2030s. The company's U.S. sales fell 13% year-over-year in the second quarter, though it faces less domestic competition as major automakers pull back from EVs and startups struggle to scale.
