Thailand has the opportunity to rise as a regional data center hub, thanks to several investment-attracting factors. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Energy reveals there is over 10,000 megawatts of reserve power capacity to support increasing electricity demand. Mr. Karan Bajwa, Vice President for Asia-Pacific at Google, said during a seminar on Efficient Energy & Low-Carbon Infrastructure that Thailand has advantages including land costs about 10% cheaper than other Southeast Asian countries, competitive electricity rates, geopolitical balance between the US and China, robust connectivity infrastructure, and supportive government policies. Mr. Smith Banomyong, Chief Strategy Officer at GULF, said the company has a 25-megawatt data center already operational and nearly 200 megawatts under construction, viewing data centers as a crucial foundation for Thailand's digital industry. Dr. Kongkrapan Intarajang, CEO of PTT, stated that fossil fuels, especially natural gas, remain necessary for power generation and national energy security, while supporting investment in carbon capture technology to achieve the Net Zero goal by 2050. Dr. Prasert Sinsukprasert, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, said Thailand has sufficient reserve power capacity to meet data center demand, with currently about 50 data center requests, and the national Power Development Plan (PDP) will be made public next week.
