BYD Co Ltd Class AChinese entrants like BYD are gaining market share in the UK, forcing deep discounts by incumbents.

The head of the UK's Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, Mike Hawes, said the rush of Chinese manufacturers entering the British market is forcing existing players to offer steep discounts. Chinese-branded vehicles now account for around 15 percent of all new car registrations in the UK, with brands like MG and BYD gaining share. Intensifying competition is one factor behind the contraction of UK car production, with output in the first half of 2026 falling 7.5 percent year on year. While the EU has imposed tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles, the UK has not taken similar steps, and Hawes added that no complaints have been lodged by British manufacturers.
