UnitedHealth Group IncorporatedPlans $3B AI investment with $2 return per $1 spent, beats Q1 estimates, raises guidance

UnitedHealth Group plans to invest $3 billion in artificial intelligence across 2026 and 2027, with management reporting roughly $2 of value generated for every $1 invested through lower administrative costs, higher productivity, and new software products. About one-third of the investment targets software products within Optum Insight, while the remaining two-thirds focuses on improving internal operations such as automating customer service, summarizing clinical records, detecting fraud, and processing prior authorizations. The company expects much of the return to materialize within 12 to 18 months, and Optum Insight also plans to commercialize internally developed AI tools as a recurring revenue source. In the first quarter of 2026, UnitedHealth posted $111.7 billion in revenue and adjusted earnings of $7.23 per share, beating Wall Street expectations, and raised full-year earnings guidance to more than $18.25 per share.
