The Vietnamese government said on September 22 that trade negotiations between Vietnam and the United States have gone well and made substantial progress, and that the two sides could reach and sign an agreement in the near future. A statement said the positive stance came after a meeting between Vietnamese President To Lam and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in New York, during the Vietnamese leader's trip to attend the United Nations General Assembly. In the talks, the Vietnamese leader called on the United States to take a comprehensive and well-rounded approach to resolving outstanding trade issues, including matters related to the Section 301 investigation under the US Trade Act of 1974, and affirmed that Vietnam has taken many measures to increase imports of US goods in order to narrow Vietnam's trade surplus. Greer said the two sides' negotiating teams had worked with full effort and achieved concrete progress, bringing the talks close to a final conclusion. Vietnam's economy relies mainly on the export sector, and the United States is Vietnam's number one export market.
