China opens World Humanoid Robot Games as strategic showcase

China opened its five-day World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing on Saturday, turning the competition into a showcase for commercial technology and a robotics industry viewed as strategically important by the government. Robots will be judged on the speed and accuracy of their hands while tightening screws, opening bottles and picking up beads with tweezers, tasks that address one of the sector's hardest engineering challenges: creating robotic hands capable of matching human precision and touch. The event reflects growing pressure on manufacturers to prove that humanoid prototypes can perform useful work outside controlled demonstrations. The industry gained national prominence after President Xi Jinping described robotics as the 'crown jewel' of advanced manufacturing in 2014, and Beijing hosted its first World Robot Conference the following year. Humanoid performance has advanced rapidly since Beijing's first robot half-marathon in April 2025, when many machines collapsed, hit barriers or failed to finish; at the 2026 race, 47 of more than 100 teams completed the course, with Honor's autonomous Flash humanoid finishing in 50 minutes and 26 seconds.
