KADOKAWA lowers net profit forecast due to special loss from early retirement

KADOKAWA announced on the 13th that it has revised downward its consolidated net profit forecast for the fiscal year ending March 2027, from the previous 5.8 billion yen to 1 billion yen, a 21.8% decrease from the prior year. This is due to a special loss of approximately 5.4 billion yen recorded in the first quarter, the April to June period, in connection with an early retirement program. Net profit for the April to June quarter was a loss of 4.5 billion yen, compared with a profit of 2.8 billion yen in the same period a year earlier. In its core publishing and IP business, domestic operations posted significant revenue and profit growth thanks to the results of business structural reforms such as price revisions and improved return rates, as well as contributions from hit titles, but the special loss from early retirement weighed on results. From the second quarter onward, the company expects personnel cost reductions of approximately 1.1 billion yen.

The two became captivated by the late Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball as children and taught themselves manga techniques. Last year, they won a silver award in an international contest held by KADOKAWA, earning a monthly serialization. KADOKAWA established an Overseas Manga Editorial Department last year to step up scouting of foreign creators, and it praised their work as having the potential to be loved by people around the world.

Tencent Is Said to Mull Exits From Game Studios Like Marvelous

Tencent Holdings Ltd. is negotiating exits from several game studio investments in Japan, including Tokyo-traded Marvelous Inc., as part of a reassessment of its global portfolio. The Chinese game-publishing giant is evaluating its minority holdings in many studios and in some cases is preparing to sell stakes back to the original management team, even if it means incurring a loss. Tencent is navigating a prolonged slump for the games industry while playing catchup in the capital-intensive artificial intelligence race against peers Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and ByteDance Ltd. The company considers whether its envisioned synergies with a portfolio company may have lapsed as a criterion for exiting an investment. Tencent's bets on marquee studios like closely held PlatinumGames Inc. and Elden Ring maker FromSoftware Inc. and its parent Kadokawa Corp. remain unaffected.
