SCG CBM upgrades Q-CON Songkhla plant into ASEAN's first smart aerated concrete production base

SCG Cement-Building Materials, or SCG CBM, is accelerating the competitiveness of its construction materials business under the Smart and Green Manufacturing concept. Most recently, it has designated the Q-CON plant in Songkhla province as the first smart aerated concrete production base in ASEAN. The plant has a production capacity of 3.9 million square meters per year and uses fully integrated automation, from raw material management and production processes to product arrangement, to support demand in the southern region and expand the market into ASEAN. Mr. Wiroj Rattanachaisit, Chief Executive Officer and President of SCG CBM, said the business is strengthening itself through four key strategies: Customer Centric, Portfolio Management, Operational Excellence, and Sustainability and Export Expansion, while bringing automation, AI, and R&D to drive production for greater efficiency and lower costs. Mr. Narongwet Watcharapanich, Managing Director of Quality Construction Products Public Company Limited, or Q-CON, said Q-CON aerated concrete products made at the Songkhla plant are designed to suit the southern climate, helping reduce heat transfer into buildings, making air conditioners work less, and saving up to about 30 percent on electricity costs. The products have also received a carbon footprint reduction label, reflecting a production process that considers environmental impact throughout the product life cycle.

SCG CBM upgrades first smart lightweight concrete plant in ASEAN in Songkhla

SCG Cement-Building Materials, the major shareholder of Quality Construction Products, or Q-CON, has upgraded its plant in Songkhla province into the first smart lightweight concrete plant in ASEAN, with an annual production capacity of 3.9 million square metres, to support growth in the southern Thai and ASEAN construction markets. Q-CON Managing Director Narongwet Watcharanapanich said the fully automated system increases production efficiency by three times, reduces staff from 90 to 26 people, and cuts production time for 7-centimetre-thick blocks from 6 minutes to 3 minutes 30 seconds. It is the first machine in Asia that can separate blocks on both sides. Lightweight concrete blocks have pores that provide good heat ventilation, helping save 20 to 30 percent on electricity costs, and are about 20 percent cheaper than red bricks. Q-CON holds about one-third of nationwide lightweight concrete sales and has total maximum production capacity of 24 million square metres per year from six plants in four areas. The company aims to expand usage in Thailand, which currently stands at nearly 40 percent, compared with 50 percent abroad, while moving forward with its 3E strategy covering education, organisation, and ESG to encourage more Thai people to use lightweight concrete blocks.
