UBS Warns US Growth Increasingly Reliant on AI Capex Buildout

UBS economist Jonathan Pingle said in a note on Thursday that the pickup in U.S. business investment and manufacturing is more dependent on the artificial intelligence boom than many investors realize. Pingle wrote that signs of broader growth have emerged this year, with the broadening theme most clearly visible in orders and shipments data, but much of that strength traces back to AI, describing the AI buildout as a rising tide lifting all boats. Traditional industrial firms are seeing more demand because of the AI buildout, with GE Vernova making gas turbines that power data centers and Caterpillar reporting strong generator sales, while demand has also spread to inputs such as steel, machinery, wiring and cable. UBS said this suggests the rest of the economy would be weaker without AI spending, and Pingle wrote that the expansion is more reliant on the AI and tech capex buildout than ever, with implications for growth, risks and monetary policy. He added that GDP growth, business investment and inventories are being broadly supported by the direct and indirect demand stemming from the AI buildout, calling the singular nature of the driving shock both unusual and exceptional at the moment.

Oracle Issues Force Majeure Notice on New Mexico Stargate Data Center

Oracle has sent a force majeure notice to the developer of Project Jupiter, a Stargate data center campus in New Mexico, Bloomberg first reported Thursday. The notice would allow Oracle to delay payments should the facility miss its 2028 target to come online, though Oracle is not seeking to exit as the campus's main tenant. Blue Owl Capital, whose unit received the notice, said the notice does not change the financial commitments to the multi-year project. Oracle said Project Jupiter remains on its planned schedule and that it is fully committed to New Mexico. The campus, designed to handle 2.45 gigawatts, is meant to run on gas-powered fuel cells from Bloom Energy, and an Energy Transfer pipeline intended to deliver gas to the site has been delayed nearly six months, to Feb. 1, 2027, after regulators repeatedly denied permits. Project Jupiter is one of the flagship sites of Stargate, the AI infrastructure initiative Oracle, OpenAI and SoftBank announced with President Donald Trump early in his second term.

ExxonMobil Completes US$185.883 Million Floating-Rate Notes Due 2076

ExxonMobil Holdings Corporation completed a US$185.883 million fixed-income offering of senior unsecured floating rate notes due September 25, 2076, featuring attached guarantees and callable, variable-coupon terms. The ultra-long-dated, floating-rate issuance adds a flexible funding source intended to match ExxonMobil's long-lived upstream and LNG growth ambitions with equally long-term capital. The company has raised its LNG sales target to 50 million tons by 2030, aiming for about 10% of the global market. ExxonMobil's narrative projects $373.7 billion in revenue and $45.7 billion in earnings by 2029, requiring 1.2% yearly revenue growth and a $12.9 billion earnings increase from $32.8 billion. Some of the most optimistic analysts had already penciled in revenue near US$507 billion and earnings of about US$55 billion by 2029.

Chevron and Egypt Push to Link Aphrodite Gas Field to Egyptian Export Infrastructure

Chevron and Egypt are seeking to accelerate agreements needed to connect Cyprus' Aphrodite gas field to Egyptian infrastructure, as Cairo looks to strengthen its role as an Eastern Mediterranean gas hub. Egyptian Petroleum Minister Karim Badawi held talks with Chevron executive Javier La Rosa this week, with discussions focused on finalizing the technical, financial and commercial frameworks required to move the project forward, and on expanding Chevron's gas exploration activities in Egypt's Mediterranean waters. Egypt said in March that technical and legal teams were already preparing key agreements for linking the field to Egyptian infrastructure, potentially allowing its gas to be processed and re-exported to international markets. Discovered in 2011, Aphrodite lies in Cyprus' offshore Block 12, around 170 kilometers southeast of the island, and Chevron operates the field with a 35% interest alongside Shell and NewMed Energy. The field contains an estimated 3.5 trillion cubic feet of gas, and Cyprus approved an updated development plan in 2025 involving a floating production unit and a subsea pipeline connecting Aphrodite with Egypt. The project forms part of a broader effort to funnel Eastern Mediterranean gas through Egypt's extensive processing and LNG infrastructure, with Egypt also working to connect other Cypriot discoveries, including Eni and TotalEnergies' Cronos project and discoveries operated by ExxonMobil and QatarEnergy.
