Egg prices rise 15.5% in nine days; impact on supply chain companies diverges

Egg prices have climbed again. Sam's Club announced that its selected fresh eggs have been raised from 18.9 yuan per box to 21.8 yuan per box. A 30-egg pack of fresh eggs at Hema Fresh rose to 22.8 yuan per box in June, up 28% from April. Mysteel agricultural product data shows that on August 17, the average egg price in major producing areas rose to 5.15 yuan per jin, an increase of 0.69 yuan per jin from August 8, with a cumulative gain of 15.5% over nine days and a year-on-year surge of 58.46%, the highest level for the same period in nearly three years. The core driver of this round of soaring egg prices is a deep contraction on the supply side combined with concentrated release of demand. In 2025, the laying hen farming industry was in a loss-making state for 11 months of the year. Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs data shows that in May 2026, the national laying hen inventory fell to 1.279 billion birds, down 1.24% month-on-month and down 4.24% year-on-year. The sharp fluctuation in egg prices has had markedly different effects on listed companies at different stages of the supply chain. Egg product processor Ovodan Egg Industry is under the most direct cost pressure, with egg costs accounting for about 80% of its total product costs. Upstream layer breeder company Xiaoming Agriculture is on an indirectly favorable transmission path, with chicken product sales volume and sales revenue in July both rising month-on-month and year-on-year. Xiangjia Stock, which has an egg business, is a direct beneficiary of this price increase, with its egg business already profitable in the second quarter. On August 21, shares of these egg supply chain companies closed lower across the board, with Ovodan Egg Industry falling 8.84% and its total market value dropping to 1.522 billion yuan.

Xiaoming Shares' July Chicken Product Sales Revenue Reaches 88.6408 Million Yuan, Up 18.04% Month-on-Month

Xiaoming Shares announced that July chicken product sales revenue was 88.6408 million yuan, up 18.04% month-on-month and up 17.97% year-on-year. The company sold 21.2874 million chicks in the month, up 9.44% month-on-month and up 6.82% year-on-year. The company stated that the growth was mainly due to high temperature and humidity causing a decline in laying rates among laying hens, leading to a temporary tightness in egg supply, high egg prices, and increased restocking enthusiasm among farming units. It is expected that in August, with the Mid-Autumn Festival stockpiling and school opening procurement demand, egg demand will see seasonal growth.

Xiaoming Shares June Chicken Product Sales Revenue Falls 22.39% Year-on-Year

Xiaoming Shares released a briefing on chicken product sales. In June, it sold 19.452 million birds of chicken products, with sales revenue of 75.0945 million yuan, down 17.26% and 14.52% month-on-month respectively, and down 15.66% and 22.39% year-on-year respectively. The main reason for the performance change is the company's proactive optimization of the chicken product sales mix, with the average selling price of chicken products rising month-on-month. In June, sales of commercial generation chicks entered the traditional off-season, coupled with a temporary pullback in egg prices, making farming units more cautious about restocking. However, commercial generation layer farming remains in a profitable range.
