Altimeter's Gerstner Blames AI 'Negativity' on Political Agenda, Opens Qualcomm and Micron Positions

Brad Gerstner, founder and CEO of Altimeter Capital, said on CNBC that he supports AI safety measures but believes recent fears are being exaggerated to advance a political agenda, adding that he wants an investigation into who is behind the negativity and where the money is coming from. Altimeter's second-quarter 13F filings show the fund opened new positions in several technology and AI-related companies, including Qualcomm and Micron Technology. Altimeter bought 1.88 million Qualcomm shares valued at about $347.9 million as of June 30, a position accounting for 3.54% of the fund's reported US equity portfolio. It also acquired 209,520 Micron shares worth roughly $241.8 million, representing 2.46% of the portfolio. Bulls argue the market still views Qualcomm as a smartphone-chip company and is overlooking its potential as an AI data-center supplier, pointing to its High Bandwidth Compute architecture, which Qualcomm says delivers 6 times more bandwidth per watt than high-bandwidth memory and which Microsoft and Meta have agreed to use. The main risk is that HBC remains unproven, with the first chips set to arrive with Qualcomm's upcoming AI250 accelerator and no testing yet at scale in real data centers.

Piper Sandler Starts Qualcomm at Neutral With $190 Price Target

Piper Sandler analyst David O'Connor initiated coverage on Qualcomm with a Neutral rating and a $190.00 price target on September 9, arguing that the company's multi-year AI opportunity is attractive but largely reflected in its valuation. Qualcomm has targeted more than $15 billion of data center revenue by fiscal 2029, and Chief Financial Officer Akash Palkhiwala said the data center business will bring in $5 billion for fiscal 2027, with $1 billion of that coming from new custom-chip customers. Piper sees $15 of earnings power for fiscal 2029, expecting data center wins to drive a four-year EPS CAGR of 16%, and projects handsets could fall to roughly 50% of EBIT by fiscal 2029. The firm flagged High Bandwidth Compute as a major part of Qualcomm's strategy, but said more traction and industry acceptance is needed for the technology, and that design wins are already discounted in the share price. Hedge fund positioning showed 95 funds held the stock at the end of the second quarter, up from 71 in the prior quarter, with Marshall Wace holding about 2.48 million shares and Altimeter Capital roughly 1.88 million shares.

Qualcomm Ties Amazon Warrant to Up to $60 Billion in Purchases

Qualcomm's September 8 SEC filing ties Amazon warrants to commercial arrangements, binding orders and actual purchases that can reach a maximum of $60 billion, a ceiling rather than a guaranteed order. Qualcomm issued Amazon a warrant for up to 25 million shares at $161.26, with 3.75 million shares vested at issuance from initial commitments, and the companies will work on server chips, systems and optical connectivity. For Qualcomm, the attraction is customer validation for a data-center push that management wants to scale toward $15 billion of annual revenue by fiscal 2029, though much of the equity vests only if future purchasing milestones are met. The timing matters because Apple is moving modem work in-house, reducing a long-standing source of Qualcomm revenue. Insider Monkey counted 95 hedge funds holding Qualcomm in Q2 2026, up from 71 in Q1, while Amazon ownership climbed to 369 funds from 353 and Apple slipped to 169 funds from 170. At the August 31 settlement, about 33 million Qualcomm shares were sold short, 3.21% of float, with 3.31 days to cover.

Benchmark Initiates SiTime Coverage With Buy Rating and $850 Target

Benchmark analyst Gary Mobley initiated coverage of SiTime Corp. with a Buy rating and an $850 target price on August 20, citing the growing relevance of precision timing for system manufacturers. SiTime reported second-quarter net revenue of $157.4 million, up 127% year-on-year, with adjusted gross margins of 67.1% and adjusted net income of $65.6 million, or $2.34 per diluted share, while carrying $1,921 million in cash, equivalents and short-term investments. The company completed its acquisition of Renesas Electronics' timing business on July 1, adding more than 550 clocking products to its portfolio and a business that serves over 10,000 customers, generates close to 75% of its topline from the AI-Datacenter-Comms market, and is expected to bring in at least $300 million in revenue over the next 12 months. Mobley's bullish case also rests on Apple's increasing reliance on its internal cellular modems, which could help SiTime generate annual revenue in the high-$100 million range once Apple's entire product portfolio shifts away from Qualcomm modems. Risks include integration complexity from the Renesas deal, heavy concentration in AI datacenter communications, and added leverage and potential dilution from the convertible senior notes issued to fund the acquisition.

Apple's iPhone 18 Pro Debuts In-House C2 Modem, But Pro Max Still Uses Qualcomm

Apple's new iPhone 18 Pro features the company's in-house C2 cellular modem, while the U.S. specifications for the iPhone 18 Pro Max do not mention the C2, leaving it unclear which Qualcomm modem is inside the larger model. The C2 supports sub-6GHz and mmWave 5G in the U.S. and Apple says it delivers AI-powered improvements to cellular quality and reliability, faster uploads than the C1X and 15% lower energy consumption. The split could stem from supply constraints, particularly because Apple is using the C2 across the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo. The development marks another step in Apple's gradual effort to reduce its reliance on Qualcomm, which has supplied cellular modems to Apple for years; Apple began breaking that dependence in 2025 with its first custom modem in the $599 iPhone 16e. Despite missing the C2 in the U.S., the Pro Max gets a major battery advantage, rated for up to 45 hours of video playback versus 36 hours for the Pro, compared with 39 and 33 hours respectively for last year's models. The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 and the Pro Max at $1,299, with both going up for preorder Sept. 12 and becoming available Sept. 18.

The UK is preparing to sanction Israeli settlements in the West Bank by banning imports of goods from the area, expected to take effect in 6-9 months. The EU and Canada are moving forward with a new relationship covering trade and security to counterbalance the U.S. and China. Chevron plans to more than double its drilling rigs in Venezuela under a five-year plan, as its joint venture will invest over $7 billion to boost production to 600,000 barrels per day by 2031. The U.S. Treasury Secretary said the expansion of the bond buyback program aims to cool the market, while pushing for a plan to reduce the budget deficit through Congress by year-end. The U.S. Treasury sanctioned Iran's airline and supporting companies, including Mahan Air, totaling 36 entities. China issued guidelines for managing AI disputes and accelerated patent approvals, while Chinese banks increased their holdings of government bonds to 16.4% of total assets in July, up from 11.5% five years ago. SoftBank is preparing to raise $10-20 billion through high-yield bonds to invest in AI, and Qualcomm revealed that Amazon will order AI chips worth up to $60 billion.

Qualcomm Returned $44 Billion to Shareholders, Yet Stock Lagged Market

Qualcomm has returned $44 billion to shareholders through dividends and buybacks over the past five years, yet its stock's total return of just 31% lagged the S&P 500's 83% gain. The company, trading around $168.74, generated $10.42 billion in free cash flow with a 23% operating margin, but revenue growth of only 1.9% over the last twelve months trails the S&P 500 median of 8.4%. Management is now pivoting toward non-handset revenue, targeting $40 billion by fiscal 2029, driven by automotive and data center chips, though this transition carries execution risk and lower gross margins. The urgency is heightened by Apple's faster-than-expected decline, with Qualcomm expecting its share of the upcoming iPhone launch to be "materially lower" than its prior estimate of 20%.

Qualcomm Names Sergio Buniac to Lead Mobile, Compute and Personal AI

Qualcomm has appointed former Motorola Devices president Sergio Buniac as executive vice president and group general manager of Mobile, Compute and Personal AI, placing him in charge of its smartphone, PC, wearables, XR and new AI device businesses from early September 2026. This leadership change comes as Qualcomm faces rising costs and concerns about reduced iPhone modem share, while it works to expand into data center and AI markets. The appointment is seen as incremental to Qualcomm's diversification thesis, with the key short-term catalyst being the ramp in non-handset revenue and the biggest risk remaining weaker handset demand and share loss to in-house chips at major OEMs. Qualcomm's narrative projects $60.5 billion revenue and $11.5 billion earnings by 2029, requiring 11.1% yearly revenue growth and about a $2.2 billion earnings increase from $9.3 billion today. The most optimistic analysts once projected revenues of about US$63.4 billion and earnings of roughly US$11.9 billion by 2029, so Buniac's arrival may lead investors to reassess whether that kind of acceleration in non-handset growth still feels realistic.
