PayPal World Facilitates $200 Million in PayPal-Venmo Volume

PayPal Holdings is using its PayPal World initiative to strengthen connectivity across its consumer ecosystem, and the effort facilitated roughly $200 million in total payment volume between PayPal and Venmo in the second quarter. The company is focusing on increasing engagement among existing customers, as second-quarter payment transactions rose 8% year over year and transactions per active account, excluding payment service provider activity, rose 7%, while monthly active accounts increased just 1%. Venmo illustrates the monetization potential of deeper engagement: Venmo total payment volume grew 14% year over year, monthly active accounts for the Venmo Debit Card increased more than 50%, and customers using both Venmo Debit and Pay with Venmo generated more than nine times the average revenue per account of peer-to-peer-only users. Among competitors, Block generated $3.17 billion in gross profit in the second quarter of 2026, up 25% year over year, with Cash App gross profit up 31% to $1.97 billion and Square gross profit up 13% to $1.16 billion on Square GPV of $72.8 billion, while Fiserv reported $5.29 billion in GAAP revenues, down 4%, adjusted revenues of $4.96 billion, down 4%, and adjusted EPS of $1.84, down 26%. PayPal's Venmo Launches 2026-2027 NIL Campaign With Nine Athletes

PayPal's Venmo has launched its 2026-2027 Name, Image and Likeness campaign with nine student-athletes spanning football, basketball, volleyball, gymnastics and softball, seven of whom compete in women's sports. Alongside the partnerships, Venmo introduced Money Moves, an initiative letting participating athletes receive part of their NIL earnings through Venmo and use the app to give back to teammates, coaches, mentors, family and fans, with campaign content running on Venmo's Instagram and TikTok throughout the school year. The push builds on Venmo's existing college-campus presence through college-branded debit cards, NIL partnerships and game-day experiences, and Venmo-commissioned research found 68% of surveyed college students said splitting costs helps prevent money issues between friends while 63% were more likely to join plans when costs could be split digitally. The campaign arrives as Venmo's second-quarter 2026 total payment volume rose 14% year over year to about $93.8 billion, a seventh straight quarter of double-digit growth, with Pay with Venmo volume up 44% and Venmo Debit Card monthly active accounts up more than 50%. Customers using both Venmo Debit and Pay with Venmo generated more than nine times the average revenue per account of P2P-only users in the second quarter of 2026, and that higher-value group roughly doubled over the past year.

JPYC to List on South Korea's Upbit on September 17

JPYC, the electronic payment instrument stablecoin issued by JPYC Inc., will list on Upbit, South Korea's largest cryptocurrency exchange, on September 17. It will begin trading alongside PayPal's dollar-denominated stablecoin PYUSD, with both tokens listing on three markets: Korean won, Bitcoin, and USDT. Trading is scheduled to start at 12:00 that day for PYUSD and 18:00 for JPYC. According to Upbit's announcement, JPYC's trading start was pushed back from the originally planned 12:00, first to 15:00 and then to 18:00, and the deposit and withdrawal network for both tokens will be Ethereum only. JPYC is issued on multiple chains including Ethereum, Avalanche, and Polygon, but Upbit will support only the Ethereum version. Noritaka Okabe, representative director of JPYC Inc., told CoinPost he was surprised that the token would be handled by Upbit, South Korea's largest exchange, before domestic electronic payment instrument operators, and said he sees great potential in the fact that the 1 million yen cap on issuance and redemption does not apply to overseas exchanges. He expressed hope that this listing would become one of the triggers for reviewing the 1 million yen issuance and redemption limit in Japan.

PayPal Bets on Agentic Payments as 2028 Growth Option

PayPal is positioning agentic payments as a long-term growth opportunity, with management expecting the technology to become increasingly meaningful from 2028 onward, though it is not expected to materially contribute to near-term results. The company believes agentic payments can help it monetize its established wallet, merchant infrastructure, identity, risk capabilities and two-sided network, but has not provided specific revenue or transaction forecasts for the business. PayPal's existing scale backs the opportunity: in the second quarter of 2026, total payment volume reached $486.4 billion, payment transactions came in at 6.75 billion, and active accounts stood at 439 million. Agentic payments are not PayPal's primary near-term growth driver, as financial services, Venmo, Braintree and improved checkout execution remain more immediate priorities amid subdued branded checkout growth. Competitors are moving too, with Visa building Visa Intelligent Commerce and partnering with OpenAI in June 2026, and Mastercard advancing Mastercard Agent Pay and expanding it with Agent Pay for Machines in June 2026. PayPal shares have gained 26.5% over the past three months, and the stock trades at a forward 12-month P/E of 9.46X versus the Zacks Financial Transaction Services industry's 17.70X.

PayPal CEO Enrique Lores Maps Turnaround Plan After Advent-Stripe Bid Fails

PayPal CEO Enrique Lores is mapping out a turnaround plan for the payments giant after a takeover attempt by buyout firm Advent International and payment processor Stripe fell through, The Wall Street Journal reported. The plan includes remaking parts of the business that have been lackluster for years, launching new features, and slashing costs, according to the report published on Friday. Lores is focusing on Venmo, a popular payments app that generates meager profits, while for the legacy PayPal checkout button he intends to improve user experience and offer better rewards to increase usage. The news follows reports last week that PayPal had laid off roughly 600 employees in India, representing about 10% of its local workforce, as part of an ongoing global restructuring to curb operational costs. PayPal shares rose 0.88% to $53.78 in afternoon trading after the report.

PayPal Expands Tuition and BNPL Payments as Q2 TPV Hits $486.4 Billion

PayPal Holdings is pushing PayPal and Venmo deeper into everyday payment occasions through new integrations with Illumia, Nelnet Campus Commerce and TouchNet that let students and families pay college tuition through existing campus portals. The tuition integrations are live at institutions including Butler University, Kansas State University, Michigan State University and Texas Tech University, with more schools expected to join in 2026, extending PayPal's existing college presence built through agreements with the Big Ten and Big 12, Venmo NIL partnerships, college-branded cards and student ambassadors. On the buy now, pay later side, Temu introduced PayPal BNPL in Canada in the second quarter of 2026, expanding availability to eight markets globally, while Home Depot Canada added upstream presentment of PayPal's BNPL options. PayPal is also working to unify Braintree, PayPal Complete Payments and Hyperwallet into a single foundation, which management expects to improve interoperability and expand self-processing capabilities, merchant lending and payouts. Second-quarter total payment volume rose 10% to $486.4 billion, with Venmo and Braintree continuing to deliver mid-teens TPV growth, while the Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2026 EPS moved a cent upward to $5.38 over the past month, implying a 1.3% rise year over year. PayPal CEO Lores Says Company Open to External Offers Amid Buyout Rumors

New PayPal CEO Enrique Lores said the company remains open to evaluating external offers against its own standalone plan, after Stripe and Advent International walked away in late August from a reported $53 billion buyout bid at $60.50 per share. Lores, who took the helm in March, told Yahoo Finance at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia & Tech Conference that PayPal will always choose whatever provides more value, adding that executing its own plan is currently the best alternative for shareholders. The board had reportedly been seeking $70 per share, and PayPal stock has since fallen to $53.20, down 81% over the past five years. Under Lores, PayPal is betting on a turnaround built around a $1.5 billion run-rate cost-savings initiative and a $6 billion share repurchase program, while streamlining into three dedicated business units and unifying the legacy Braintree, Hyperwallet, and PayPal Complete Payments platforms. The benefits of that effort are not expected to begin surfacing until 2027 at the earliest.

PayPal cuts about 220 jobs in India

PayPal has eliminated roughly 220 roles in India as part of a previously announced restructuring programme, according to a person familiar with the matter. The job reductions are linked to a multi-year plan to simplify global operations and strengthen execution. A PayPal spokesperson said the staffing changes are part of the company's transformation to position for long-term growth. PayPal, under CEO Enrique Lores, targets $400 million in cost savings by year-end and at least $1.5 billion over the next two to three years. The layoffs represent nearly 4% of PayPal India's workforce of over 6,000 employees. One impacted employee said they received no prior notice and were informed on a call that they would be let go, with access revoked immediately. PayPal's global headcount was about 23,800 at the end of 2025. The restructuring comes amid market speculation about a potential acquisition, though reports indicate a consortium including Stripe and Advent is no longer pursuing a $53 billion offer.

Robinhood leads August finance sector gains as Aon sinks

The financial sector posted a modest 0.54% gain in August, slightly outperforming the S&P 500's 0.11% rise, with Robinhood Markets surging 36.03% as the top performer and Aon falling 10.53% as the worst. Robinhood's rally was fueled by record second-quarter revenue of $1.31 billion, up 32% year over year, and stronger cryptocurrency trading volumes as Bitcoin prices recovered. Coinbase Global climbed 27.56% on record crypto market share and positive adjusted EBITDA, while FactSet Research Systems advanced 10.31% on strong organic revenue growth. On the downside, Aon dropped 10.53% after its $17 billion USI acquisition, funded with new debt, pressured the stock, and PayPal Holdings fell 8.30% following the collapse of a reported $53 billion takeover pursuit by Advent International and Stripe. Analyst Ian Bezek noted that financial stocks were driven more by company-specific factors than broad trends, with uncertainty over interest rates keeping many bank and insurance shares in a holding pattern until the Federal Reserve clarifies its policy path.

PayPal's Financial Services Growth Faces Credit Risks

PayPal Holdings is increasingly relying on financial services, including credit and Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL), to diversify growth beyond payments, with management expecting these revenues to grow at least twice as fast as the overall company in 2026. In the second quarter of 2026, financial services accounted for close to 20% of PayPal's transaction margin, while BNPL total payment volume grew 26% and monthly active accounts rose over 20%. Venmo Debit Card monthly active accounts grew more than 50%, and customers using both Venmo Debit and Pay with Venmo generated over nine times the average revenue per account of peer-to-peer-only users. However, consumer and merchant net charge-off rates increased to 4.8% and 7.6%, respectively, in the second quarter, and credit expansion raises liquidity requirements and external funding dependence. PayPal's shares have gained 37.6% in the past three months, and the Zacks Consensus Estimate for full-year 2026 EPS has been revised upward to $5.38, indicating a year-over-year increase of 1.32%.

Wall Street's major averages traded higher on Thursday after investors digested jobless claims and trade data, with the Dow up 0.8%, the S&P 500 up 0.6%, and the Nasdaq Composite up 0.9%. Bitcoin surged more than 3% to approximately $79,800 as traders scaled back bets on a Federal Reserve rate hike following higher-than-expected jobless claims and dovish comments from Fed Governor Christopher Waller, with the probability of a September hike falling to 50.4% from 63.2%. The U.S. ISM Services PMI expanded for the 26th consecutive month, rising to 55.4 in August from 54.1 in July, surpassing consensus estimates. PayPal shares continue to fall after acquisition talks collapse

PayPal, the world's largest payment services provider, plunged more than 14% at one point on August 28, and fell about 2% on Monday, August 31. Bloomberg reported, citing sources, that on August 27, a consortium of rival Stripe and private equity firm Advent International had called off talks to acquire PayPal for $60.5 per share, totaling over $53 billion, which was seen as a negative catalyst. The start of acquisition talks was reported on July 15, and the stock had risen more than 30% from the previous day's close to a recent high, but the two sides could not agree on the acquisition price. If the acquisition had succeeded, it would have been one of the largest leveraged buyouts in history. PayPal has been losing market share due to intensifying competition from Apple Pay and Google Pay, and may be forced to restructure on its own. The company is exploring a reorganization plan to separate its three business divisions, aiming to cut annual costs by $1.5 billion over the next two to three years. Investment bank Loop Capital Markets lowered its price target from $62 to $50, but said acquisition activity could reignite.

Dow closes slightly lower after Fed chief reiterates inflation target

U.S. stocks closed in negative territory on Friday (Aug. 28) after Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh reiterated the goal of curbing inflation during the Jackson Hole meeting, leading to expectations that the Fed may raise interest rates. Meanwhile, Nvidia shares fell 4.6% and Marvell Technology dropped 10.3% on concerns about revenue from AI chip deals with Google. PayPal shares also fell 12.7% following reports that Advent and Stripe had abandoned plans to acquire the company. PayPal's $53 Billion Stripe-Advent Bid Withdrawn, Shares Plunge

A consortium of Stripe and Advent International has withdrawn its $60.50-per-share, or about $53 billion, bid for PayPal, sending shares down 12.7% to $53.66 on Friday. The withdrawal removes a safety net that had supported the stock, which had gained nearly 30% since reports of the bid emerged. PayPal's board had deemed the original offer inadequate, and Bernstein analysts told Reuters they believed management was unlikely to accept a price that wasn't 'meaningfully above $70.' Now trading nearly 11% below the rejected offer, PayPal must prove its standalone value, with CEO Enrique Lores' turnaround under scrutiny. Affirm's surge followed its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings, which CEO Max Levchin called "our most profitable quarter ever, even without the tax allowance release," and the company also promoted Michael Linford to president and launched Shop Pay Installments in Australia exclusively through Affirm. Klarna and Sezzle had no company-specific catalysts, with their gains driven by read-across relief from the removal of a potential giant rival. The ARK Blockchain & Fintech Innovation ETF was down 0.1% to $47, while the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust rose 0.1% to $772.16, indicating a name-level event rather than a sector move. Venmo and PayPal to accept college tuition payments at select universities

Venmo and PayPal announced that college students and their families will now be able to use these payment platforms to make tuition payments at select universities. Bellarmine University, Butler University, Kansas State University, Michigan State University and Texas Tech University are among the schools on board so far, with more expected throughout the year. Colleges may charge a service fee on top of the tuition payment for using the platforms, and Bryan Dickson, education-policy director at the National Association of College and University Business Officers, noted that a 2.5% credit-card transaction cost on a $25,000 tuition payment would represent $625 that the institution may have to absorb or pass on to the payer. Since PayPal and Venmo are not banks, account balances are not always FDIC-insured like a traditional bank account, though users of select PayPal or Venmo branded offerings such as a PayPal Debit Card Mastercard, buying and receiving cryptocurrency, or the Venmo cash a check deposit feature may be eligible for pass-through FDIC insurance through program banks such as Goldman Sachs and Wells Fargo.

Bitwise CIO says blockchain transactions could expand 100-fold with AI and tokenization

Matt Hougan, chief investment officer of crypto asset manager Bitwise, pointed out three mistakes crypto investors are making in a blog post on August 18. He said that while crypto assets total only about 2 trillion dollars compared with a 150 trillion dollar stock market and a 350 trillion dollar bond market, tokenization could expand the potential market for platforms like Uniswap by 100 times. He also cited the example of PayPal's stablecoin holding only about 1 percent share while Tether and Circle control more than 88 percent, arguing that the competitiveness of crypto-native companies is being underestimated. What he emphasized most was that future transaction activity is being underestimated by 10 to 100 times. He said tokenization could increase the tradable hours of US stocks from 33 hours a week to 168 hours, a fivefold increase, and if AI agents handle buying and selling, it is easy to imagine transaction volumes rising 10, 50, or even 100 times.

PayPal Holdings and Venmo can now be used for U.S. university tuition payments through new integrations with Illumia, Nelnet, and TouchNet. TikTok quietly develops money transfer feature via chat, pushing fully into fintech

TikTok is studying the development of a new feature that would let users send money directly to each other through private messages, using TikTok Pay, which is currently available only in Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam, as the system supporting transactions. Clues were discovered in code hidden in the iPhone version of TikTok in the United States, pointing to a peer-to-peer payment system where the recipient can tap to accept within a set time and the sender can attach a message along with the transfer, similar to PayPal's Venmo. A TikTok spokesperson said the feature has not yet entered testing in any market, but the fact that engineering work has already taken place reflects that parent company ByteDance is seriously considering expanding into the person-to-person money transfer market. Data from Sensor Tower shows that consumers worldwide have spent more than 2.9 billion dollars on TikTok since the start of this year, and TikTok has held the position of the world's highest-grossing app from in-app purchases since 2022.

PayPal in sale talks with Stripe and Advent consortium

PayPal is reportedly in discussions to sell itself to a buyer group that includes Stripe and private equity firm Advent International, according to the Wall Street Journal. Stripe and Advent had submitted a joint bid in July of $60.50 per share, valuing the payments company at about $53 billion, a steep decline from its peak valuation of almost $360 billion in 2021. Discussions have continued after the earlier deal did not proceed, and a fresh agreement could emerge in the coming weeks, though the value of any revised transaction has not been disclosed. PayPal shares rose nearly 1.8% following the report.

PayPal Targets $1.5 Billion in Cost Savings

PayPal Holdings is on track to deliver at least $1.5 billion in gross run-rate savings over the next two to three years, with about $400 million of new run-rate savings targeted by the end of 2026. The plan comes as profitability faces pressure, with second quarter 2026 revenues up 5% year over year to $8.68 billion but non-GAAP operating income down 8% to $1.51 billion and non-GAAP operating margin falling to 17.4% from 19.8%. The savings plan has three main drivers: a simpler structure, operational and portfolio changes, and wider use of artificial intelligence, with AI expected to be the largest contributor at roughly 40% of total savings. PayPal is not planning to bank all those savings, as much of the money is expected to be reinvested in areas such as financial services, Buy Now Pay Later and Venmo. Shares of PayPal have gained 34.6% in the past three months, and the Zacks Consensus Estimate for full-year 2026 EPS has been revised upward to $5.37 in the past month.

PayPal's branded checkout weakness pressures stock despite volume growth

PayPal's total payment volume rose 10% year over year in the second quarter to $486 billion, but weakness in its most profitable segment, online branded checkout, is weighing on the stock. Branded checkout TPV grew just 2% in the quarter and accounted for 28% of total TPV, down from 26% annualized growth between 2018 and 2021. Transaction margin dollars increased only 1% last quarter, reflecting the segment's struggles. CEO Enrique Lores said the company is raising its expectation for online branded checkout to the low-single-digit range for the year. Intense competition, notably from Apple Pay with an estimated 900 million global users, is likely a key factor pressuring the fintech stock, which trades down 81% from its 2021 peak.
